On last Saturday afternoon at
4:30 o’clock about 100 fans and
quite as many bleechers, augmented
by the usual number of rooters,
gathered at Exposition park to wit-
ness a match game of base balL be-
tween the lawyers of Sherman and
their brethren of this city. At the
time indicated, Mr. Robert Cook of
this city was chosen umpire, and
one of the most interesting battles
ever witnessed between the legal
fraternity of Grayson connty began
with Sherman at the bat.
During the first inning it devel-
oped that the Sherman team were
saggers, and the way the fathers
sent Dear men’s down-shoots over
towards the back fence was calcu-
lated to make the Sherman cranks
fairly yell with enthusiasm. But
this condition of affairs only lasted a
short time, when three men were
put out and Denison had her inning.
Sherman secured two runs the first
inning.
Pitcher Montgomery was the re-
cipient of much applause when he
stepped into the box, his matchless
form appearing in a perfect-fitting( ?)
sweater. Catcher Vowell played an
errorless game behind the bat, but
before Montgomery could regulate
his speed properly every base was
covered by a Denison lawyer, and
during the second half of the first in-
ning the home team secured eight
runs. The two-bogger by Maughs
and the base running by Standifer
were the features of this inning.
When Sherman went to the bat
for the second inning, Montgomery
had discarded that beautiful sweater
and by some clever base running
took five runs from Denison in short
order. Tolbert distinguished him-
self during this inning by making a
long run down second, while De-
armen gave Leslie first base by hit-
ting his little finger.
Denison came up smiling, but
when it was discovered that Repre-
sentative Simmons had succeeded
Vowell behind the bat, many root-
ers commenced to hedge, and while
he did splendidly behind the bat,
Denison scored three more runs,thus
running her score up to 11 at the end
of the second inning. Sherman then
took her turn, but played in hard
luck, and when one score had been
made three men were out. Judge
Wilkinson did some splendid work
on second, while Cummins and
Suggs played ball in a manner that
elicited much applause among the
fans.
Denison profited by another
change in Sherman’s battery, fairly
knocking the cover off Professional
Brown’s up-shorts. Sherman had
promised that Brown should remain
in the field, but Denison with her
usual liberality, permitted them to
substitute Brown for Montgomery.
Aside from the good impression
made upon the ladies, this famous
pitcher did very little to distinguish
himself. Eppstein ran bases like a
Dallas Steer,while Maxey and Mur-
phy made the Denison folks yell, so
well did they steal bases from the
Sherman fielders. Denison added
three more scores during this inning.
At the beginning of the fourth in-
ning Sherman had recovered some-
what and by putting in several sub-
stitutes managed to make four runs.
Rice Maxey said that Judge Wolfe
and Will Hay were invincible and
Sherman would win easily, but Den-
ison was too much for them and the
way they pounded the air was a cau-
tion. Bets were even at this stage
of the game.
Denison took her last turn at the
bat with the last half of the fourth.
Dearmen “filed a special exception”
to one of the umpire’s rulings, but
not being sustained he gracefully re-
tired. Major Maughs sent a liner
to Culver, who missed the ball, and
when these men were out Denison’s
score footed up 19, having made two
additional runs.
Sherman played great ball during
the first half of the fifth and last in-
ning, but Denison was toD far ahead,
and while Judge Wood cheered,
Capt. E. J. Smith averred it was no
use, and the game closed by Sher-
man making six runs, a total of 18
fof the visitors, who retired much
pleased with the sport.
NOTES.
Mrs. Chas. Vowell and Miss
Wood were interested spectators,
and applauded liberally Sherman’s
many brilliant plays.
County Attorney Maxey and fam-
ily enjoyed the game, and it is said
that as a captain, Mr. Maxey is not
as successful as he is in furnishing
the authorities at Rusk with addition-
al help.
Representative Simmons said it
surpassed a night session of the
Twenty-fourth legislature.
Mr. McCrary played a great game
and it is said contemplates joining
the league soon.
^The monument fund continues to
grow, says George McLagan.
Judge Wilkinson sprained one of
his legs while making good time
between first and second base.
Much to the regret of the Denison
team, Sherman furnished half of the
crowd. Denison will do better next
time.
