The little chipmunk hat no soul*
Such as resides In noble man)
Poor thine. Its home to lust a hols
No architect was calico to plan.
Its richer brothers will not seed
When winter dims the distent tan,
To take things from the stores to feed ^
Its cold aad hungry little one.
Ere bllaxards howl across the hill
The soulless chipmunk takes good
care
To stock its larder and to fill
The home with all that gladdens
there.
Nor does the chipmunk pile swmr
More than It needs ten thousand fold,
Or fight Its brothers so that they
Must starve when nights are long and

There was a scene of brutality

A rabbit was turned loose, and
then a dog. Alter an exciting chase
the dog was fagged out and taken

Then another dog was turned

a third and fourth. It was quite ev-

fellow, who, with a fair sense of
justice, after his ran for life, should
have been given his liberty. With
all the brutal and unfair treatment
it looked for a time as if the rabbit
would escape tbe dogs which were
crazy to rend him. A man threw
blanket at tbe rabbit, and then
another kicked and sent him rolling
over on his side. The odds were
fearful, but between the kicking and
the long ran tbe brutal sport was
nearing its end. The rabbit was
exhsusted at last, and a fifth dog
was turned loose to tear it limb from
jmb. It was a great victory, and
the human brutes applauded. Rab-
bit coursing it brutal sport and
should never be permitted. It is a
disgrace to a civilized community,
and we have but little respect for
people who, by their presence, will
encourage such a pastime.
We are very much surprised to
learn that even ladies are patrons of
the coursing park. It doesn’t teem
wesible and natural that a woman
of tender sensibilities can enjoy the
brutal sport ot rabbit coursing. Suf-
fering in whatever guise appeals to
tbe sympathies of woman. Frown
upon the courting park. And we
also appeal to the men to keep
away. Of course the brutes will go.
It is tbe same instinct which fed in-
nocent women and children to the
lion's mouth in tbe days of Nero and
Couglin. There is no law to pre-
vent rabbit courting but there should
be, *Ld the legislature that pastes
against it will earn the gratitude of
all decent and human people. We
learn that the courting park it a
Sherman idea, that it is owned and
operated by Sberman people. We
hope that the papers over there will
join with tbe Gazetteer in a vig-
orous crusade against tbe brutal and
unnatural pastime known as rabbit
coursing.
