Wonders of water
Nueces County Water Control and Improvement District No. 4
employees were handing out information about water last week
during Water Utilities Awareness Week. In addition to handing out
brochures at the Family Center IGA, the district sponsored a poster
contest for elementary school students and gave high school
biology students tours of the waste water treament plant. Here,
James Patty, left, and Scott Mack man the information table at the
Family Center
ported from the Aquarium to Port
Aransas via truck in a specially
designed “sling”. The dolphin was
loaded onto the University of Texas
Marine Science Institute’s research
vessel, theLonghorn and, about three
miles offshore of Port Aransas, the
sling was lowered into the gulf and
D3 swam away.
The mammal recovery was made
possible by volunteers in the Texas
Marine Mammal Stranding Net-
work under the supervision of Tony
Amos of Port Aransas, veterinarian
Dr. Floyd Garrett and 36 volun-
teers who worked day and night
over the six week recovery period to
keep the dolphin alive.
D3 will be monitored by a satel-
lite monitor attached to its dorsal
fin. The battery-powered unit will
break away under adverse condi-
tions and should last up to one year
Monitored by TIROS Weather sat
ellite, D3 can be tracked by the Argos
System six times a day for 30 days,
then twice a day until the battery
goes down.
Legion post
seeks name
The American Legion Post being
organized in Port Aransas is seeking
suggestions for a name.
The group has made an open re-
quest to all Port Aransas families of
deceased veterans to suggest an hon-
orable name for the post.
“We would like to honor the name
of a service member who died in
service to their (our) country; or a
deceased member who has served
honorably,” said Keith Polcnz, one of
the organizers.
Those with suggestions are asked
to mail the name along with a brief
military history to: The American
Legion, P.O. Box 344, Port Aransas.
Polcnz said the group really needs
the names before July because the
post will receive iLs charter in late July
or August
For more information, contact
Polcnz at 749-5125 from 7 a.m. until
4 p.m.
