ADVISES SUPPORT OF
ROAD BOND ISSUE
The following communication

session of the State Legislature, joint celebration for their birth

The Valentine motif was beau
tifully expressed and brought to
a pretty climax on the dining
table, where a huge red heart
was centered, with ribbons ex*
tending to the place cards where
covers were laid for Messrs and
Mesdames M. 8. Doss, W. M.

pending in the Legislature is
sure to become a law a this ses
sion, and in order for Gaines and
other counties to participate in
the 8tate’s program of retnbur-
sing counties for their road
bonds issued and used on State
highways he says Gaines County
should by all m?ans take advant
age of this and vote for the is-
suance of the bonds on 8a*ur-
day, Feb. 28. In doing this Mr.
Lockhart is advocating same,
notwithstanding the fact that he
is a large tax payer in Gaines
County. He owns in fee seven
and one*half sections in Gaines
County, this being located in the
west and southwest portions of
the county.
If non resident tax payers who
own Gaines County lands see
and believe in the the voting of
these bonds, surely our home
taxpayers should consider well
what they are doing before they
register a vote against this is-
sue,
Judge J. J. Kendrick,
Seminole, Texas.
Dear Judge:
I understand that the Commis-
sioners' Court of Gaines County
has ordered an election be
held on February' 28tH, to de
termine whether or not the
property tax tmying voters of
Gaines County authorise the is-
suance of road bonds.
I have been requested to give
my opinion as to the passage of
Forty - second Legislature with
reference to the road situation
m Texas, and you are advised
that there is now a joint resolu-
tion pending which proposes to Texas would be enti ely changed

to issue bonds, to build and con for the construction of State
struct state highways, and to Highways, but the roads will be

ness of the several counties
which have already built high-
ways. In my opinion the joint
resolution submitting the Con
stitotional Amendment is not
likely to pass both Houses of the
Legislature. However, there is
some two or three other bills
pending in each House which
have for their object the paying
off of the bondedjodebtedness of
the counties that have already
constructed certain highwaysi

of this kind will be passed at
this session. The sentiment 1n
both Houses of the Legislature
is overwhelming in favor of tome
MS of this kind or character.
A great majority of the mem-
bers of each House represent
counties that ere now burdened
with heavy bond issues and cer
tainly they will support iegis
lation of this kind. Therefore, I
believe that now is the opportune
time for counties like Gaines and
others to vote bonds and build

SERVICE PROMISED TO
SEMINOLE BY APRIL 1
Representatives of the Semi
inole Chamber of Commerce
called upon Mr. Hincbey, vice
president of the West Texas Gas
Company at his office in Lubbock
the first of this week. The ob-
ject of this visit was to find out
when this company expected to
complete their line into Semi-
nole.
It was stated by those in
authority that pipe for their line
from Seagraves to 8eminole
factory within the next ten days,
and upon its arrival work of
ditching and laying this would
be started immediately. The
Seminole representatives were
assu red that this service would
be here ready for use by April 1.
A committee composed of
Judge Kenirick, former Judge
Pittman, Mr. Lindley, Mr. Rey-
nolds, Mr. Strange of Peters,
Strange and Bradshaw, archi-1
tects, and Mr. Southall, went to
s.<e what could be done about the
school house situation. They
report very encouraging results,
and it is believed now that the
trip will bear good fruit iu the
near future.

passed providing for the pay-
ment of the present highways or
that is providing that counties
certain legislation pending in the ghall be reiieved of their present
indebtednesses which were ere
ated by the building and con
struction of highways, then the
system of building highways in
built after the State can get to
them, and in my judgment it
would be many years before the
State can gal to Gaines County
to build a road, and if you haye
your road already built you
would coma in as one of the
counties to be reimbursed on ac
count of this indebtedness, and
as a property tax payer of Gaines
County I am in favor of the issu
ance of these bonds and the
building of highways in Gaines
County at the earliest possible

public.
With 81,609 new Chevrolet

ket during the last month of 1980,
the company exceeded by 2,000
anlts the second leading make.
Figuresv so far reported for
January indicate that the reia
tive position of Chevrolet in ths
lead should be maintained for the
month jnst ended, particularly
since Chevrolet’s January pro-
duction was 70,000 units.
December was the first month
in the history of the automobile
that six cylinder cars led the
field in deliveries to consumers,
While Chevrolet in 1927 and
again in 1928 was first in manu-
facturing and sales in ths Indus
try, the company’s performance
in those years was based on the
old four-cylinder car. Since the
change over from a four to a six
in 1929, Chevrolet has forged
ahead to this leading position.
This passing of leadership to
the six cylinder automobile is
interpreted in automotive oircles
as indicating a growing public
preference for the larger, mul
tlple cylindered car, when it
combines operating economy
with an initial price range in the
lowest priced field. The current
Chevrolet models are two inches
longer than last yes/ despite
prices ranging from $20 t $40
lower than the 1980 models.
