Mrs. Oscar Pattillo, 903 E. 18th,
has a favorite recipe for cherry
tarts which she often prepares for
her family and friends. The recipe
is amazingly simple, says Mrs.
Pattillo. and the results delicious,
according to her friends.

AT YOUR SERVICE
Some friends of mine are high in their praise of
the telephone for its dependability in practically
any kind of weather, day and night. They’re happy
with their telephone service and we’re glad they are.
But we’re not content to rest on our laurels.
To improve their and your service, new ideas to im-
prove telephone equipment are constantly tested by
telephone scientists. New methods are continually
put to work to help your calls go through easier and
faster. Behind the scenes, experienced telephone em-
ployees work “around the clock” to give you the
best in telephone service.
These three reasons, new ideas, new methods and
experience, are why telephone service never stops
improving, yet remains easy on the family budget.
OUT OF THE PAST
I was thumbing through some old magazines the
other day and found some household hints that had
been published during the war years. One column
suggested using an egg-timer to limit your Long Dis-
tance calls to three minutes.
I started wondering if anyone is still using an
eggtimer out of a force of habit I hope not because
you certainly don’t need to.
Today, there are plenty of Long Distance lines.
You can talk as long as you like and as often as you
like. In fact, its wiser to take your time on Long Dis-
tance calls and say everything you want to say. One
six - minute call always costs less than two three-
minute calls. The longer you talk, the less it costs on
a per-minute basis. And, you save and additional one-
third when you call station-to-station

oven (450 degrees) 10 minutes or
till the pastry is a golden brown.
Cool and remove from tins.
For the cherry filling, Mrs. Patt-
illo uses one can of red cherries
(water packed), one cup sugar,
three-fourths of a cup cherry juice
(juice from cherries and water to
make this amount), three rounded
teaspoons of flour, one teaspoon
butter, and one-eigbth teaspoon
almond extract.
Combine one-hall cup cherry
juice with sugar in saucepan. Mix
the remaining juice with the flour
and add to sugar mixture. Cook
slowly, stirring until thickened.
Remove from flame, add butter
and extract. Add drained cherries
and mix well. Mrs Pattillo belie-
ves that the almond extract is an
excellent accent for the cherries.
Fill the pastry shells with the
cherry filling and top with sweet-
ened whipped cream
Cooking is Mrs Pattillo's hobby
A native Milam Countian, she is
one who sticks by proven recipes
and frequently prepares food pro-
fessionally.
Mrs. Pattillo has two daughters,
Mrs. Bennell Depew of Cameron
and Mrs. A. O. Jackson of Albu-
querque, New Mexico.

Mechanized Production
Texas farmers are now using
approximately 300,000 tractors and
more than 2,500,000 allied farm
implements in order to gain the
advantages of efficient mechani-
zed farm production. In addition
to this investment, W L. Ulich,
extension agricultural engineer,
says farmers of Texas spent about
$95,000,000 for petroleum products
and $75,000,000 for farm equipment
repairs last year.
Keen Vision For Birds
We would see more if we had
eyes like a bird's. A bird has two
keen-vision patches in each eye
rather than one circular retina as
we do One pair of keen-vision
patches provides straight ahead
vision, while the other gives side-
ways vision. Thus a bird can look
straight ahead, to the right, and
to the left seeing clearly in all
directions.
