Staff Writer
The Chamber of
Commerce teamed up with
the Texas Book Festival
First Edition Literary Gala
to give away a trip for four to
the The Sweetwater Jaycees
World's Largest Rattlesnake
Round-Up. Keith Taylor was
the winner of this auction.
After winning the package
for four, Keith invited his
three motorcycle ride bud-
dies, Hoagy Carmichael,
Bobby Pennock and Bill
Gaddis.
All of the guys traveled to
Sweetwater on their motor-
cycles, in the rain, to attend
the Rattlesnake Round-Up.
"We aren't complaining
about the rain. It's all about
having fun and enjoying the
ride. Even though it was
raining and cold we were
still laughing and having a
good time. It’s all in the
heart," Carmichael said.
Keith Taylor is from
Celebration, Fla., Bill
Gaddis is from Fort Myers,
Fla., Bobby Pennock is from
Beverly, Ohio, and Hoagy
Carmichael is from
Moundsville, W.V.
All four of the guys met
through Hoagy Carmichael's
charity rides. Hoagy set up
his motorcycle rides in
2003. The goal is to raise
money through organized
annual long-distance motor-
cycle rides for children's
cnari’ies. For more informa-
tion on Hoagy's rides, feci
free to visit his website
www.hoagysheroes.org.
"One thing about the rides
that makes us different from
everyone else is that we
donate every single penny
that we collect. It all goes to
charity," Carmichael said.
Keith Turner found out
about the auction when the
Texas Book Festival sent
him an e-mail. He figured
that it was a unique oppor-
tunity and decided to bid on
it.
"The guided hunt was
intriguing, along with every-
thing else about the sched-
ule of events. My wife is
from Midland and I kind of
knew about the event and
figured it would be interest-
ing and fun," Turner said.
He said that the fact that
he was going to be visiting
the wind capital was also
intriguing. He had never
seen a windmill and was
curious about them. Coming
to Sweetwater was the per-
fect way to cure that curiosi-
ty-
The package that Turner
won contained four all
inclusive VIP Passports to
the 2009 Sweetwater
Rattlesnake Round Up. The
package provided them with
motel accommodations at
Best Western, two rooms for
two nights, along with wel-
come baskets, four VIP
admission passes to the
Round Up and the
Sweetwater Knife & Coin
Show, meals at local restau-
rants, four VIP passes for a
Guided Snake Hunt, the
opportunity to serve as a
judge for the cook off, four
VIP passes to the dances,
and a tour of Sweetwater
Wind Farm, TSTC, Mustang
Bowl and other points of
interest.
Carmichael said that he
would like to hold two big
snakes while at the Round-
Up and he would like to
catch a big snake on the
hunt. Bobby Pennock said
that one thing he plans to
accomplish on this trip is to
overcome his fear of snake
"I am afraid of snakes and
always have been. While we
are here I want to touch a
snake. As long as someone is
holding that snake making
sure that I won't get bit,
Pennock said.
He was more than happy
to come along for the ride
when he was asked because
he is always up for the ride.
According to all of the guys,
it's all about meeting people
and enjoying each other's
company.
Taylor said that once he
won the package it wasn't
hard to figure out who he
was going to bring. He knew
that he could call up
Carmichael at a moments
notice and he would be there
for the ride. said.
"There's not too many The group commented on

Roscoe City Council approves
right-of-way for E.ON
BY KIMBERLY GRAY
Corresponding Reporter
Roscoe City Council members agreed to abandon a city
right-of-way along Broadway near the property of E.ON
after opening the council meeting with a public hearing on
the issue.
At a meeting last month, Donnie Brennan with E.ON
requested use of the right-of-way in order to expand their
building for more storage. At that meeting he announced
that they plan to make Roscoe the company's regional
headquarters and storage for large parts like transformers.
He sited the location between the interstate and railroad
as one of the reasons for the choice.
Last month city officials determined that they had no
use for the right-of-way, since access to utilities was from
a different direction.
Also on the agenda Thursday night, election judges and
details regarding the May 2009 city council election were
considered. Helen Lopez was appointed election judge,

"The Easter program is a tradition that military children
really look forward to, and its a great way for people to
show their support of our service members and their fam-
ilies," said Mark Smith, president and CEO of Operation
Homefront. “Were hoping that just as in the past, local
businesses and community organizations will again help to
make this another successful Faster event.”
