"HOUSEKEEPING" PRACTICES PAY BIG
DIVIDENDS
THE USE OF GOOD "HOUSEKEEPING" PRACTICES IN THE
BACKYARD OR COMMERCIAL FRUIT ORCHARD AT THIS TIME
OF THE YEAR WILL PAY BIG DIVIDENDS, EXPLAINS COUNTY
AGENT CALVIN D. HOLCOMB.
PEACHES AND PLUMS WHICH WERE DISCARDED OR DROPP-
ED FROM THE TREES DURING THE HARVEST SEASON SHOULD
EITHER BE PICKED UP OR PLOWED UNDER TO A DEPTH
SUFFICIENT TO PREVENT THEIR BEING RETURNED TO THE
SOIL SURFACE NEXT SPRING.
BROWN ROT, FOR EXAMPLE, CAUSES A DISEASE OF
PEACHES AND PLUMS WHICH IS CHARACTERIZED BY A RAPID
DECAY OF FRUIT AT HARVEST TIME. DECAYED FRUIT LEFT
ON THE TREE OR UNDERNEATH IT CAN SERVE AS A SOURCE
OF THE DISEASE-CAUSING SPORES NEXT SPRING.
IN ADDITION TO CARRYING OUT A GOOD CLEAN UP AND
SANITATION PROGRAM NOW, PLANS SHOULD BE MADE FOR
THE USE OF PROTECTIVE SPRAYS OF FUNGICIDES SUCH AS
SULFUR, CAPTAN OR BOTRAN NEXT SPRING. THESE SPRAYS
WILL PROTECT THE YOUNG FRUIT FROM INFECTION, SAYS
THE COUNTY AGENT.
HE ALSO ADVISES THAT MATERIAL IS AVAILABLE FROM
HIS OFFICE ON BOTH DISEASE AND INSECT CONTROL
PROGRAMS FOR HOME AND COMMERCIAL FRUIT PRODUCERS.
THIS INFORMATION COMES FROM JERRAL JOHNSON, EX-
TENSION PLANT PATHOLOGIST. THIS IS ANOTHER CASE
WHEN AN OUNCE OF PREVENTION IS WORTH POUNDS OF
CURES.
