If those patriotio citizens who are
anxious to we the butcheries in the
Philippine Islands terminated, but who
cannot see exactly how this govern-
ment is to'‘let loose,” will attend next
Saturday’s mass meeting they will prob
ably get an idea or two which will help
them to a conclusion on the point.
In another column of this paper will
be fonnd a call for a mass meeting tc
be held next Satnrday evening at the
court house to condemn the ad ministra-
tion’s conduct of affairs in the Philip-
pine Islands. From the signatures at-
tached to the call and the interest man-
ifested on the st'eets and in the busi-
ness houses, the meeting promises to be
largely attended. People of all politic
al parties will be present and many
ladies are expected. Music will be
provided and good speakers have pro-
mised to assist, several of them being
men who served with honor in the war
against Spain, bnt who are not in fav-
or of the war against the Filipinos.
It is officially annonneed from Wash-
ington that onr delegates to the peace
conference at The Hagne will take the
ground that the United States army is
so small in comparison with those of
the European powers that it can in no
sense be considered as a menace to the
world’s peace and that European pow-
ers should not expect us to reduce it
The delegates of the other powers will
be expected to construe this contention
in a Pickwickian sense, while asking
themselves the question of how ninth
more than a hundred thousand men
might be considered necessary to con-
stitute a menace to the peace of the
Philippine islands, eight thousand miles
away on the other side of the globe.
The strength of the United States army
was multipled by four by the last con-
gress, and another iucrease in like ratio
by the next congress would bring it up
to very respectable proportions, even
judging from an European standpoint.

An Associated Press telegram from
London announces that a message has
been received hy the Filipino junta
stating that the American volunteers in
the Philippines are beiug abused, pnt
on short rations and kept at the front,
and that four hundred soldiers of a
Cincinnati regiment have been impris-
oned by General Otis for refusing to
fight. This is a startling announcement
and emphasizes the necessity for the
protest against the war which is being
voiced all over the union, and resulting
in mass meetings in so many eastern
cities and towns. Here at borne we
find many men who feel and declare
that the war is an infamous one, but at
the same time state that, "now that we
are into it," they want to see it vigor-
ou-ly prosecuted until the Filipinos Hre
whipped and lay down their arms.
