city last Tuesday morning throw him-
self into u trance and root with a
tragic end or has he been drawn to
California through the hypnotic Influ-
ence* of .1. U Allen, his former
teacher in hypnotism?
These two question* arc bothering
tile filends of the missing man. If
is claimed that Duncan and Allen
were great friends and students of
hypnotism and mineralogy. Allen left,
tills c-ky some time ago, and Is now
said to he in Ban Francisco, Duncan
left a little more than a week ago,
without telling any one of his friends
or acquaintances. All his accounts
were straight.
Ills motion disappearance created a
great sensation. Some time ago Dun-
can and Alien practiced hypnotism on
a iiFgrti, who told them of a hidden
t rcastire on Lookout mountain which
was left there during the Civil war.
Investigation showed every detail con-
forming with (he location of the treas-
ure to lie correct, except that some
thing, presumably a small package,
had been removed from the hole
which the negro designated. The two
men also made extensive Investiga-
tions in a long cave which extends
thirty mites through Lookout motm-
lain ari l claimed to have found rich
mineral deposits.
It 1the supposition that Duncan
either threw himself Into a trance, as
he was In the habit of doing, and
then became unable to throw off the

Mobilization of Troops Demanded—
Norway I* Alarmed.
Christiana, Sept. 9.—-With the re-
turn from Karlstad of the Norwegian
coiftiftlsBioners sent to dismiss with
the commissioners of Sweden the
question of dlsolutlon of the union, de-
cider! uneasiness prevails, and this Is
accentuated by the silence In official
circles regarding the progress of ne-
gotiations.
The prevailing nervousness has
been increased by the tone of the
Swedish newspapers, that are now
calling upon the government to mobil-
ize 70,000 troops, at the same time
pointing out that Norway Is only able
to command 3,000 troops. While the
SWedish riksdag demanded that the
“fortresses recently erected be no lon-
ger maintained,” the Swedish newspa-
ners insist that the fortifications of
the old fortresses of Fredriksten and
Kongsvinger shall be destroyed. Re-
sponsible persons here gay the arro-
gant tone adopted by the Swedish
press, unless it is modified, it likely to
lead to serious developments.

Washington Elm Almost Dead.
Cambridge, Mass., Sept. 9.—Age
has so weakened and decayed the
tree under which Washington took
command of the American army July
3, 1775, that the life of the historic
elm is believed by the Cambridge
park omission to be nearly ended.
The Washington elm, long venerated
as the site of Indian councils as well
as of Washington's assumption of
command, has received treatment in
order that It might be maintained,
but the best that could be done has
not prevented the gradual wasting
away of Its substance. eYstorday a
large limb had to be removed and It
Is feared that others soon must be
treated In like manner. The tree is
estimated to be more than 350 years
old.
