Life in Lake Michigan.
New York, April 11.—Rev. W. How-
ard Mears, curate of St. Matthews'
Episcopal church, who was arrested
hy (he police ai a house in the. Ten-
derloin district March 12 last, where
he had gone in the company of a
negro woman, was today deposed
from the ministry by Bishop Greer,
following a report by a committee of
inquiry appointed lo Investigate the
conduct oi i he preacher.
The committee reported that the
curate had violated his sixth ordlnn
lion vow, which requires a clergyman
"as far as in him lies to make him-
self a wholesome example and pattern
to the flock of Christ.”
Mr. Mears. while asserting that he
was not actuated by any wrong mo-
iiv In visiting the house In the Ten-
derloin, and that bis presence there
was with a view of making sociologi-
cal Investigations, accepted the com-
mittee's findings, declared in writing
his renunciation of the ministry and
forwarded his resignation to Bishop
Greer, who then deposed him.
Tim magistrate before whom Mears
was arraigned following his arrest, ac
repted his explanation of his pres-
ence in the Tenderloin and he was
discharged.

Chicago, April ll.—The dead body
of Mrs. Sylvester T. Smith, wife of
a wealthy retired railroad official, was
lound today in Lake Michigan at the
Toot of 47th street. She is believed
lo have committed suicide by jump-
ing Into the lake while temporarily
Insane. Mrs. Smith is sail to have
suffered from dementia since the
death of her mother recently.
Mr. Smith, the husband of the wo-
man. was formerly superintendent ot
i he rnion Pacific, manager of the
Denver & Rio Grande, and president
of the Florence & Cripple Creek. He
was prostrated by the suicide. The
coroner's jury returned a verdict this
afternoon of suicide.

Fearful Wreck on the Canadian Pa
cific Railroad—Two Tourist Cars
Railed Into Lake.

worst wreck in the history of the
Canadian Pacific railway occurred
yesterday near Chapleau. Fifteen
persons are missing ami are believed

San Francisco, April 11.—Joseph
Gilman, the well known bookmaker,
was taken east today as an insane
patient by Deputy Sheriff Whalen.
He came here as the financial barker
of the Sun Carlos Opera company, in
which xvore Ma lam Nordica and Alice
Nielsen, and was taken to a hospital
Kfortly after his arrival.

press of the Traders' Compress com-
pany, with its contents of 14,‘00fi
hales of cotton, xvas destroyed by
fire here today, causing a loss esti-

000. The loss is fully covered by in-
surance. The compress was owned
by Noil P. Anderson of Fort Worth,
and R. K Wooten and L. M. Potts
of this city.
