GRANDE
COMPANY VICTORIOUS.
HEXICO’S SllPKEME COURT DENIES
W. C. GKEEN’S AMFARO.
He Charged Mexican Judge jet Arlipe and
Attonie;* WeraJn Colluilon—Green Ar-
raigned and Found uullty at Perjury by
the Same Court, but the Higher Tribunal
Xtluulased the Case on Insufficiency of
Euldence.
Mr. L H. Chalmet*', of Phoenix, Ari-
zona, attorney for the Cobre .Grand
Copper company, arrived yesterday af
ternoon from the City of Mexico, and
today will go west on the Sonthejrn Pa-
cific.
Mr. Chalmer’a trip to Mexico was for
the purpose of appearing in the oaee of
W. C. Green against the Cobre Grande
Copper company, carried .up from Uo
gales ten days ago. The case was a writ
of amparo sued ont by Mr. Green
through which he alleged.collusion be-
tween the Cobre Grande’s attorneysj
and a local coart, the resnlt.of which;
woald deprive Mr. Green of his prop-1
erty.
“lam in a position to agree with Mr.
Green, that American investors find
ample jnsticeinthe Mexican courts,”
said Mr. Chalmers last night “The
amparo, which corresponds to atur ha-
beas corpus, was sited ont before the
district judge at Nogales ten days ago,
charging that the Cobra Grande copper
company’s attorneys and the local judge
at Arispe were conspiring to take pos
session of the property of Green and
others. The writ was denied by the
district judge at Nogales, and appealedi
by Green to the supreme court. May 0;
the supreme court unanimously sus-
tained the decision of the Nogales *;ourt.
“Notwithstanding Mr. Green’s asser
tion to the Times." continued Mr.
Chalmers, “that the litigation was at
an end and that he had been successful,
it has jnst begun. The Cobre Grande
company expects to secure its property
and the conditions arc fair that it will.
I wish to say I have every confidence in
the integrity and ability of the Mexican
courts; and the morel look into their
modes of procedure the more satisfied
am I that litigants get justice
“With reference to Mr. Green’s vie
tory, of which he spoke while in El
Paso, he had been arraigned before the
Arispe court on the charge of perjury,
and found guilty. He sued out a writ of
amparo, carrying it to the supreme
court. The supreme court dismissed the
oase, holding the evidence ivasnotsuffi
cient. The court, at the same time, was
of the opinion that Mr. Green might
have made some misrepresentations to
the lower court, bat they were not suffl
cient upon which to base a charge of
perjury.”
THE CLOUDCROFT EXCURSION.
Delightful Trip Over the Wonderful “Cloud
CUinblug Route.”
Sunday morning at 7:30 o’clock a
special train left the El Paso & North-
eastern depot with 300 excursionists
aboard for Clouderoft. It was the an-
nual excursion of the Hook and Ladder
company, though there were not half a
dezen members of the company on the
eiourBion, a fact which caused friends
and guests of the company to wonder
why it voted to have such an outing if
the members did not intend to be on
hand to entertain their guests. How-
ever, Mr. Adolph Sohutz, a member of
the committee in charge was on hand
and did everything in his power to make
the trip pleasant for the guests of his
company; and his efforts in that line
met with excellent results,
The MoGinty band, about twenty-
four strong, went with the excursionists
and disooursed inspiring music at eyery
stopping point. Conductor Jones was
in charge of the train and took fatherly
care of those on board, especially of the
ladies.
The run to Alamogordo was made iu
quick time and the population of the
Magic city was at the depot to hear the
band and see the excursionists change
cars for the “Cloud Climbing Route.”
Hon. W. A. Hawkins, the able young
attorney for the White Oaks road join-
ed the excursion at Alamogordo, hav-
ing with him, as his guests, all of the
lawyers attending the court now in
session at Alamogordo.
The journey up the •‘Cloud Climbing
Route” must be experienced to be ap-
preciated. Words cannot describe the
marvelous work of the engineer or the
grandeur of the scenery. The road is
the most wonderfnl piece of railroad
work in the United States. For fifteen
miles the traveler sits in the open cloud
climbing oir gazing with delight upon
the magnificent scenery and regarding
with a feeling akin to awe the human
ingenuity whioh constructed the road
over which he is passing. The beautiful
and ever ohanging scenes are as rapid
and wonderfnl as could be conjured up
by the fabled lamp of Aladdin.
One minute the train is gliding
through a lonely mountain valley and
the next minute it is climblDg around a
mountain crag or skimming across a
bridge far above the tops of giant trees
below. Then it glides into another
miniature valley and numberless rivu
lets, that leap from crag to gorge, come
dashing down pell-mell, until with a
noisy jubilance the gurgling currents
meet, kiss kinship and sweep on through
canyons to the parched earth and thirsty
cattle in the great valley below.
From the Alamogordo valley the
train begins its upward route by enter
ing a canyon, and as it advances up
ward green foliage begins to appear on
all sides, and near Toboggan on a huge
rook leaning ont over the traok is a
large bnnoh of yellow flowers—sentinels
guarding the pass to the floral kingdom
&bov6.
And Clouderoft! Well, it is the mas-
terpiece of that great artist Nature and
its beauties and grandeur cannot be re
produced on canvass or with words. It
is a magnificent forest of pii.es with so
undergrowth of green foliage, and wild
flowers. The wind sings a soothing
lullaby in the pine tope and the atmos-
phere is iadened with that beantlfal
perfume of tfie dry wild woods Ctas
tered around the big eating and dano
ing pavilion are many neat cottages
provided with fire places; for a fire is
vlways comfortable at Cloudoroft in the
evening, even in midsummer.
The excursionists after eating a good
dinner erjoy^d dancing and strolling
through tie wooes nutil time for de-
pemre Returning down the mountain
the first sud s-oond section of the train
ran within bailing distance of each
other for a quarter of a mile The first
section was half a mile below the sec-
ond section and five miles ahead, yet
the passengers on the trains were shout-
ing to each other.
The rnn back to El Paso was made
without accident, the train reaching
here at 10:30 o’clock Lick of space ex
eludes a more extended report of the
excursion.
Messrs J. C Loekland, W. R. Gray-
son, R D Richey, Joe H Frist. Joe
Barlow, Adolpn Sohntz. Sheriff Bjone
Editor Matteson and J. W. Connors
constituted a cupola party and from
their high perch were able to see every
thing. Recorder Patterson left his over-
coat in the cupola and the crowd pawn
ed it for four bottles of cold beer.

that date.
