At 8 o’clock this morning th# battle
of ballots will b#gln. Saaday and yaa
tarday tha air was thick with ramors
relative to withdrawals and a third
leket, Ban day afternoon a nnmbar of
dlsgraatlad Democrats and Populism
made an effort to place a third ticket
lo the field, bat the eoheme miscarried
because no one was anxious to be
plaoed up as the leader of a forlorn
hope. A meeting was held at Libor
ball to try and get the dissatisfied to-
gether, bat this felled, as there did not
appear to be enongh of the dissatisfied
to keep eaoh other warm by bnnohlng.
As a last reBort, however, rnmors were
set (.float yesterday afternoon to the
effect that John O’Keeffe had with-
drawn and O. -F. Bleok substituted as
the Republican candidate for mayor.
When these rumors raaobed the ear of
Mr O’Keeffe he went to his Republi-
can friends and told them he was per-
fectly willing to withdraw In favor of
any one who might be more aooen’able
to the Repnblloan voters. But the
leadera of the parly woald not listen
to any withdrawal proposition, so Mr.
O'Keeffe will make the race.
The dlaturbsrs were also busy with
che Democratic tloket, and last night
It was rumored that Judge Megoffio
had withdrawn from the head of the
Demooratlo tloket and that O. T.
Bassett bad been substituted for
mayor. Of oooree there was not the
leaBt foundation for snob a rumor,
and It was promptly sllanoad.
Yesterday afternoon Messrs. J B.
and Dave Piyne asked for a confer
enoe with Judge Megoffio, and while
the partias were oloeeted a rumor was
started to the sffeot that the Paynes
had pledged their support to Judge
Magoffin In exchange for the oily
clerkship. Bat after the oonferenoe
it wee learned that Judge Magofflo had
refused to hold out a promise of any
kind to the gentlemen. Friends of the
Messrs. Payne eay that they only
talked with the judge on the railroad
question, and will support him.
Oartaln It Is that the Republicans
appeared greatly dlsoonraged last
evening, and unless they braoe np
wonderfully this morning they will
pat up bat a very sorry fight at the
polls today. The Democrats! on the
other hand, feel that they have already
won and their confidence extends alt
along the line. Chairman Pitmen
said yesterday that the entire Demo-
cratic ticket would receive a handsome
majority.
THE VOTING PLAOES
Tha polls will open at 8 o’olook this
morning. The polling plaoa in the
First ward will be at the Star Stables
and L H. Davis will be presldtog
judge. The Second ward polls will be
at the Overland corral on Stanton and
W. S. MoOatobeon will ba the pre
siding officer. In the Third ward
Maury Edwards will preside and the
polls will be on the oorner of Stanton
and St Louis streets, while the Fourth
ward polls will be at 117 Ban Francis-
co street, arid Adolp Sohutz will be the
presiding officer. If you go to toralob-
lng your Australian ballot be careful
or you will lose your vote.
THE LIST BOUND UP.
List night the Dsmooretlo heed
quarters presented an animated toene.
There were three or four hundred
voters In the hall obearingfor Magoffin
when thsy were not listening to ettrrlng
speeches from Demooratlo orators.
The Demicratlo organization Is per-
fect and will present to the enemy this
morning • front weak at not one single
point. After leaving the hall the Times
reporter met Judge Megoffio who teld:
“Toera le no longer a split of any
character In the Dsmooretlo ranks. I
had a oonfersnoe with the Meetre.
Payne this afternoon end we bed a
long good old Demooratlo talk. They
will support the Demooratlo tloket.”
So It will be seen that there wee no

The Times reporter alao visited the
Republican headquarters and found
about seventy-five or an hundred peo
pie there. And that same Itstleeenees

To the oltlzins of El Paso:
Slnoe the Republican city convention,
on the 9th Inst, nominated Its munic-
ipal tloket to go before the peo-
ple at today’s election It has been
harassed by an intimately related
ooterle of shyster politicians who
claimed to be with the Repnblloan
party In the campaign against Its op-
ponents. They have attempted In
various ways to oontrol the ticket aud
organization and at the last moment
sold out for promised patronage. They
have since attempted to disrupt the
Republican organization In every
manner possible and have adopted the
infamous ooonpstlon of circulating
falsehoods end reports with malicious
latent, to oreate distrust and disunion
—principally to cause my personal
defeat.
To the people of El Peso I have this
tosay: I am a young maD, there is no
doabtof it. I have lived in El Paso for
fourteen years. I have property In-
terests. 1 am Independent of any
man or clique of men. 1 oars not a
ploayune for the private Interests of
aoy individual or oorporatlon as
against tha lntsrests of the oommun-
lty. The people of this olty have
honored me with two year's expertsnos
In the council and 1 have a knowledge
of the needs of the olty In the way of
improvements and government.
1 ask for the suffrage of no oltlzen
who doss not conscientiously believe
It would be to the Interest of the
community to vote for the Republican
tlokat. The Republican tloket haa no
money, nor heelers, nor bnlldczsrs, at
the polls today and when vlotory Is
perched on Its banner.tonight the re-
sult will be the expression of an on-
trammeled citizenship. The under
signed has an abiding faith in the
moral oourage and ability of the people
of El Paso to rid thsmselvss of
ths prassnt oonsplraoy that olotha*
Itself In the garb of Demooraoy for
purposes of self advancement and b
monopoly of tha suooessiou to effioe.
Very truly,
John O'Keeffe.
