New York, March 22.—The stock today
persisted in Its waiting; attitude. The
undertone was strong and until the last
hour the demand, light os ti was, was
filled on a rising scale in prices. This In
consonance with the conviction of the
habitual traders In stocks that prices
arc entitled to An advance when the "sap
begins to rise,*’ tempered by considera-
tion of possible complications in the
money market on the first of the com-
ing month.
Scantiness of supplies of stocks offered
for salt' was an undeniable fact today,
which fa< dilated the efforts of the pro-
fessionals to move prices upward on the
light accumulations. Foreign markets
were about as apathetic as that here and
the causes of the dullness were pretty
fairly common to them all. Besides the
April first-money settlements, a pause Is
in order preceding the coming holiday
efforts.
Such news as came to hand was In-
tenpreted In a sense fuvombto to values
of securities. The average price of 1101.28
realised for the New York city 4*4 per
cent bonds, proved higher than was ex-
pected at yesterday’s close. The new’
bonds were dealt In “wheif Issued** at
prices above the list In the outside mar-
ket yesterday, and the older issues all
made fractional recoveries.
The proportions of the issue taken by
foreigners was estimated by competent
authorities amongst the International
hankers as high as 25 per cent of the to-
tal. This would mean a supply of for-
eign exchange to an amount of more than
$12,500,000, an Important contribution to
the needs of the debit balance of New
York.
Statements attributed to western rail-
road officials kept up confidence In a
settlement of the dispute of those com-
panies with their locomotive firemen
Following the adjustment of the Balti-
more & Ohio difficulty, this new’ success
of the government mediators would be
accepted us assurance against other dis-
putes.
Tile -Gompers manifesto against the
United States Steel corporation and the
New* Haven strike later unsettled this
confidence.
The coppers were firm In the expec-
tation of the adoption of the Anaconda
plan at tomorrow’s meeting. Reports that
the Canadian tariff negotiation was
working out favorably were helpful In
sustaining prices.
The tone of foreign exchange held firm
in spite of foreign subscriptions 1" the
New York bonds. Rules for time money
were shaded.

value, $3,844,000.
