Casas Guanmiks, Mex., April 18-
Strangers arriving at Casas Orandes
station are surprised to find all the busi-
ness of the place still conducted in box
cars and temporary frame sheds. The
reason is that there has tieen unavoid-
able delay in getting the signatures to
the papers conveying the land to the
townsite company. The essentials are
all agreed upon, hut the formalities are
not complete, 11 is expected that every-
thing will is- cleared up in a few days.
As soon as it is, no less than fourteen
business houses of the old town of Casas
Graudes will proceed with all dispatch
to erect buildings and move over to the
station. Mr. Matthews, who does a
large mercantile business at Guzman
and has a box car branch spire here,
will at once erect a large building here
for both wholesale and retail trade. All
this is of much importance to prospect-
ors, who are often caused much incon-
venience, expense and delay for lack of
u good outfitting store here. The mu-
nicipal offices and postoflice will also he
removed from the old town to the sta-
tion as soon as the conditions warrant it.
Mr. Henry Kyring of Oolonia Juarez,
the leading lumber dealer of the Mor-
mon colonies, informs me that he has
arranged to put up at once a telephone
line from Casas Orandes station to Co-
Ionia Juarez and on to the big Thatcher
sawmill, twenty miles beyond in the
mountains. This line will lie thirty-six
miles long, from the railroad station to
the mill, with an extension from the
! completed in the fall, an independent
; train will lie made np at Raton run | station to the end of the track at Terra-

Washington, April U The testi

tee on foreign relations in connection
with the investigation into the rela-

Cuba was nptde public today, it con
stitntes a book of about 650 pages and
includes not only the testimony taken
since the disaster to the Maine, but also
much that was taken before, and run
ning back for a year or more.
The statement which contains the
greatest current interest is that made
by Consul-General Lpe on the 12th iust
In this statement, General Lee said he
was informed on very good authority
that Spaniards had placed two rows of
torpedoes jnst at the month of Havana
harbor by Morro castle within the past
two months, or subsequent to the Maine
disaster, and that the switch board is
in a room in the castle. He said, how-
ever, he had no information of the
placing of any torpedoes before the
Maine was destroyed, and none in re-
gard to the purchase abroad by Spain.
