A**Ortatc<l Press Dispatch
Associated Press (Hspatch
New York, Dec. 22.—-The Gould is-
sues & Lehigh Valley attracted most
attention today in the stock market.
The advance In Lehigh Valley was
continued and apparently was based
on the belief that some action soon
may be taken In regard to an extra
distribution to shareholders. The
quotation was advanced three points
to 186%. the highest price on record,
although this gain was later reduced
by profit-taking
Among the Gould Issues trading
was heavy in tho Wabash four per
cent bonds. \ A demand for these de-
veloped late and they rose nearly 3
per cent to 55%, as compared with
50 earlier in the week. The pre-
ferred also advanced. Denver & Rio
Grande showed pronounced weakness
early but later rallied sharply. In the
recovery the 5 per cent bonds jumped
from 80 to 85.
The market showed the customary
symtoms with a triple holiday at
hand. Trading was on a small scale
and final changes were Inconsequen-
tial , In most cases. Some of the cop-
per shares declined after their recent
advances and American Woolen
showed weakness which perhaps re-
flected the recommendation for a re-
duction of the tariff on wool and
woolens.
In the money market there were no
signs of stress such as prevails
abroad. The banks this week re-
ceived more than $11,000,000 from
the interior, about $6,000,000 less
than last week, when the movement
was the heaviest recorded in weeks.
Estimates of tomorrow’s bank state-
ment Indicated a gain, the amount
being placed from $5,000,000 to $9,-
000,000.
The bond market was irregular,
with a large proportion of the tran- D.
sactions in the Wabash fours. Total
sales, par value, $3,839,000.
^United States bonds were unchang-
ed on call for the week.

WOOL MARKET IS FIRM.
Associated Tress Dispatch
Boston, Doc. 22.--The Commercial
Buletin will say of the wool market
tomorrow :
Transactions in the Boston wool
market this week hate been only
fairly god. Last wek further large
purchases of territory staple wools
were made, making the total for tho
present week about the same as that
of a week ngo.
The fortnight estimates place the
transactions at 10 to 12,000,000
pounds. Fine washed delaine is firm
at 31 cents and fine staple at 21 cents
or 61 to 62 cents clean, while half
blood is held at 22 cents or about 55
#57 cents.
Little fear is expressed in the. trade
over the report of the tariff board.
Special to The Times.
Roswell, N. M„ Dee. 22,—This
morning about 7:30 the ball Sr at the
Beatty steam laundry plant in Ros-

room and severely Injuring the fire-
man, Carl Birdsell. Tho boiler and
the boiler rotn were completely
wrecked by- the explosion and it was
a miracle that tlie fireman was not
Instantly killed. The ruins at once
caught fire and but for the prompt
work of the flredepartment further
serious damage would have resulted.
The total loss amounts to about ?700.
The building will lie rebuilt at once
and a new boiler Installed. The in-
jured fireman was able to be around
the streets this afternoon and will
3uon recover from bis hurts.

CHICAGO GRAIN.
Associated Tress Disput'd
Chicago, Dee. 22.—Both longs and
shorts today busied themselves get-
ting c.ear of wheat. All American
grain exchange* wll be closed tomor-
row and Monday and there was a gen-
eral desire to be free, of .•ommttt-
ment and avoid the effects of any
surprise which might be sprung In
foreign markets. j
The evening-up (#oeess left wheat
varying from a shade low-er to a half
cent higher than last night. Corn
eluctuated a sixteenth to a quarter
of a cent down, oats unchanged to %
cent* off and hog products either not
altered or 5 cents decline.
Good weather helped to relieve both
stdes of the wheat market though at
different times. V
World's shipments prbmised to be
nearly 3,500,000 bushel* less than a
year ago, but this fact was offset by
signs of another Increase of the
United States visible supply. The
Minneapolis stock especially looked
large at nearly 17.000,000 bushels.
May ranged from 98 to 98%e, with
last sales 99%c, a net loss of a shade.
In the corn pit a little show of
firmness, duo to small receipts, af-
forded a chance for longs to unload
to advantage. Shrorts covered on
the ensuing decline and brought
about a steady feeling at the close.
May fluctuated from 63%#64 to
64Hc. finishing %#% cent down at
64%c. Cash grade* were easier. Num-
ber 2 yellow was not quoted Selling
out of a large line held by a local
speculator weakened oats. Afterward,,
however, the market hardened. Up-
per and lower limits touched for May
were 47% and 47%e, wtth the close
a sixteenth net lower at 47%#%r.
An attempt to advance packing
product* brought out rather free of-
ferings and made values react. In
