Special to The Thins.
Hoswell. N. M.. Oct. 4.— Roger S.
Elliott yesterday shipped to Chicago
a solid carload of alfalfa seed, bought
from the farmers living near Dexter.
The seed weighed 4 4.4HO pounds ami
will be sold to a Chicago wholesaler
at 14 to 1ft cents per pound, making
the worth of the shipment approxi-
mately $6,500. The seed was cut from
several small fields which aggregate
1100 acres, it was as a last resort on
account of the hay being so short it
made a poor euting for feeding pur-
poses, the shortness being caused b>‘
the exceedingly dry weather. Ami non
it will of# more than two crops of hay.
In every case, this cutting has follow-
ed two earlier crops of hay from th«
same fields. Mr. E!1UtU grew part of
the seed himself.
Presbyterian Pastor Resign**
The congregation of the First Pres-
byterian church rwas surprised .venter
day to receive the resignation of the
pastor. Dr. W. C. Alexander. The
resignation is effective November 1,
and gave no reason for its action. Dr.
Alexander has been pastor of this
church about three years. having
come from one of the first churches of
Washington, V. C.. being drawn west
by the illness of his son. who passed
away more than a year ago. The
church will call a meeting to pass on
the resignation.
Hoswell Drinks Come High.
Frank Blair surprised the * ii> of-
ficial* Saturday night by appearing be-
fore Justice A. J. Welter, city police
Judge, and declaring that he wanted
to clear up the cases against him. H“
had been tried a stew weeks before
and found guilty of violation of th
prohibition ordinance by giving
friend a drink out of his bottle, the
fine being assessed at $50 and costs.
He had been arrested a few days ago
on two new counts of a similar nature.
On Saturday evening he withdrew his
appeal in the first case and pleaded
guilty In the two new cases, received
a fine of $25 and costs in each of the
new fuses, and paid up in full, the
total of fines and costs'being $133.
