Silent Heroes
Austin, Texas
When it cutnes to making a bad
<t*v a little easier to endure, no one
does it any better than Wylie Police
telecommunicate*. Susie Ellison
It's not certain whether she
could he called a “silent hero"—
hut her unmistakable laugh bright-
ens the spirits of all within earshot
and provides comfort in tune of
crisis. In a department our si/e, the
telecommumcators are frequently
called upon to play a variety of
roles—lending a shoulder of sup-
port to the stricken and soothing
ruffled leathers of the irate FArr-
haps that's what's most remark-
able about this colorful telecom-
muntcaior—she never seems to tire
of "taking care of business."
Whether its sandblasting a tired
rescue watercraft for the fire-
department, or pestering retailers
to donate a Christmas toy for
poverty-stricken children in our
community, Susie always seems to
he there
Her favorite project, the Wylie
Police Department’s "Blue Santa"
toy drive staffed four years ago
with a mere 12 participants. This
past Christmas, however, more
than 130 eager children lined the
halls of city h;dl for a special toy
and a hug from Santa. Our candi-
date for “Silent Hero" is known
around town for her generous heart
and uncanny resourcefulness. She
passes out food to hungry citizens
and provides a steady right hand
for our police chief and department
of officers. Susie Ellison leads by
example, never by word, and
always seems to personify the best
our department has to offer. A role
model to her peers and the commu-
nity she loves, she’s donated count-
less hours to assisting senior citi-
zens and providing strong partici-
pation in our city’s Communication
and Employee Committees.
The lives she’s touched cannot
he measured in terms of num-
bers—she’s a role model not only
as a telecommunicator but as a
human being All of this, without
recognition or reward. However,
winning this honor will ensure this
dedication to community is silent
no longer.
Thank you for your considera-
tion,
Michelle Rusk,

Ask Dr. Hambrice
VERSATILE

Q. C'an habitual grinding of the
teeth cause serious problems?
A. Yes. People with this condi-
tion, called bruxism, generally
grind their teeth during sleep.
The continued grinding can wear
down the teeth’s protective hard
enamel and expose the softer
dentin. This can heighten sensi-
tivity to hot and cold foods and
drinks. Severe grinding over a
period of time can cause teeth to
loosen.
Grinding the teeth is something
that can’t be cured simply by
telling a person to stop doing it.
But there are steps that can be
taken to lessen some of the
effects. One is a plastic night
guard that protects the teeth,
much like an athlete’s mouth-
guard. If you habitually grind
your teeth, make an appointment
with the dentist to evaluate the
condition of your teeth and dis-
cuss the preparation of a night
guard.
