Re-Employment
Ralph Smith, Deaf Smith Oounty
Veterans Service Officer, has been
named a volunteer Veterans Re-
employment Rights Committeeman
for Deaf Smith Oounty by the Vet-
erans Reemployment Rights Divi-
sion of the U. 8. Department of
Labor.
Smith, the newly named VRR
committeeman, will act as a volun-
teer arbitrator between veteran*
seeking reemployment and their
former employers. The 00th Con-
gress extended the reemployment
rights provision of the Selective
Service Act after the Act expired i
March 31 of last year. By law a vet- • 1
eran who applies for his old job In
90 days after he leaves the armed
services may regain It and may not
be discharged from the position
without cause for the period of on* 4
year.
Under the volunteer organization
being set up by the VRRD, the Tex-
as Employment Commission's office,
located at 323 W. 7th Avenue, In
Amarillo, Texas, will serve as an In-
formation center for the veterans.
Veterans with reemployment prob-
lems will be referred to Mr. Smith.
If he cannot settle the issue lo-
cally, the case is turned over to the
regional office of the VRRD In Dal-
las. A final step. If the VRRD falls
to get the employers *nd veterans
together, Is action tnrougl
rough the fed-
eral courts by \T. 8. district attor-
neys.
An estimated 2,000 to 8.000 Texas
veterans are being discharged from
the armed services each month now.
Many of them have job rights dating
as far back as 1840 when they left
to enter the Army or Navy, Smith
reports.
