The good roads convention
which convened in Waco several
days ago will result in little good
unless the people of Texas oatch
the spirit of the occasion and
takn up the work in a practical
way. Our nejt legislature should
be encouraged to inaugurate
some practical system of good
road building in the state.
With reference to J;he causes of

Sunday night, mentioned In Mon
day’s Herald;: i Fire1 a Steward,
Murchison states that the causes
mentioned were riot entirely, re-
sponsible. Whue theife, was a
hitch in the giving in of the al
arm—he having had the team in
harness when he finally received
it—and there waB an instant’s
excitement on the part of one of
the horses which resulted from
unfamiliar handling on the part
of a stranger, yet the Chief delay
was caused by the absence of
members of the Hose company
when the plug was reached which
prevented a quick coupling being
made. In waiting for the hose to
be connected with thepfug, some
time was consumed which'detain-
ed unduly the playing out of a
line of hose. >:■ ,.»;£■ • :

Returned With Prisoner.
Wednesday, .Sheriff Bratton
returned from Waxah&chiS with
two prisoners, J. D. Diggins and
Carl Wyatt, who are charged with
having forcibly entered the estab-
lishment of the Lowe-Carter
Hardware Co. several weeks ago.
Diggins looks to be about 30
years old, and has the face and
bearing of a hardened crook.
Wyatt is a number of years
younger than his partner, and has
a better countenance than he, al-
though much weakness c^n be
read therein.

Ws left Weatherford about i .*40
p. m. expecting to return not later
ban 6 o’clock. We had not goqe
far however, until there was some
doubt about making the trip on
schedule time. Ho seridus ac-
cident ooeurred, but we had 'to
make numerous stops tq adjust
parts of the machine, to allow ve*
uclee with soared teams to ppss
and for a fresh supply of water
for the engine. All along tike
route at sound of the alarm; teen,
, and-children, came nish-
ing to the front to see the “horse-
carriage. As we passed
Yerb Isbell’s place, himself and
family were in the yard and Mr.
Isbell saluted us by throwing his
old hat high in the air with
“Three Cheers tor the Auto.’'
Going on to Veal Station we made
tea boat run on the trip, making
a speed of 20 miles an hour. At
the Station there was quite a
crowd to welcome us. We stopped
at Mr. Sam Woody’s to'‘tank up”
with water, for we anticipated beneficial
some heavy road before reaching
our destination. When we same
in sight of Springtown we thought
there must be some celebration
taking place as tike streets were
filled with people. Upon getting
closer we observed that the crowd
seemed to be looking south as
though expecting the arrival of
some notables. However, we soon
understood the situation, for we
were informed that some one at
Veal Station had phoned OVer
that we were coming.

After a few moments spent.in
pleasantries with 1;he Springtown
people we began a skirmish f6r
gasoline, for it was very evident
we had to,have several gallons if
we returned home that evening.
After buying all the drugstore
had, which wasn’t sufficient, a
friend phoned to Mr. J. W. Mc-
Cracken, who uses a gasoline
engine on his farm for pumping
water, to know if he could spare
us five gallons. He readily as-
sented, and the next question
was, how to get it, for he lived was the occasion great and
three-fourths of a mile away and friendly applause. The leoturer
on , but there, was a “the
about the machine that
evil. On reaohing Mr. O;
Lamb’s it was necessary to Stop
and make an examination, and
while this was being done, the
Rambler and Mr. Doughty pro-
ceeded to J L MeFariand’1 to get
if necessary, a team to drive us
hotel. After some effort we suc-
ceeded in waking Mr. McFarland
—and his household,—but not a
horse in the lot did we find.
However Mao and his son soon
found the old gray team in the
pasture and j we knew we would
get home then. Upon reaohing
oamp, however, our friends had
about put the machine in working
order and after appologizing for
putting lfim to so much trouble
we bade Mr. MoFarland good
night and moved on. 'It was not
long before we wished we had al-
lowed Mr. Mao to follow on,
for about two miles opt of town
our supply of gasoline gave out
and we were “up against it.”
The road to town was good, and
an early morning walk is always

while there were many 8prihg-

being established, some doubted
the practicability of the scheme,
We left Springtown for horns

plenty of gasoline to make the
trip, but it was not to be so. We
passed Veal Station after “taking
on” water at Mr. Woody’s about
dusk, and everything was running
smooth. When we crossed the
Clear Fork, we discovered our
water was getting low and it was
not safe to try to make Weland,
so we stopped about a mile from
Mr. Edgeman’s to fill our reser-
voir with water. As there wee
no one et home and water we
must have, we went in search of

for we found the well end a large
wash tub, which we soon filled
and transferred to the auto. Now
