J. D. Shaw, the editor of the Inde-

His eflort seems to be to des’roy con-
fidence in the Bible and to place noth-
ing in its stead. He would place
man on an islaud midway between
two eternities, destroy his charts, de-
clare Tiis compas false, obscure bis
pole star and leave him. Poor mis-
guided man. There need be no one

and no amount of talk will serve to
change them. The man who does
not understand tree coinage and fiat

Dr, Hodge of Austin, filled the
pulpit at the First Baptist church
Sunday night. From the first utter-
ance one felt that be had a message
and when he concluded, one felt that
he had heard much, but that the
speaker had so many good thing*
that he kept hack fur want of time,
he felt hungrier to hear than when he
began. Hi* style is “sui generis.”
With hi* profound learning he ar-
rests attention; with his sylogistic
logic he storms the fort of reason;
with his marshaled host of troths,
Ke takes the citvdel ot the bouI. He
threw the calcium light of truth on
the the dark passages ol life and the
way waa bright. He Hashed the
Christian camera and took your pict-
ure as you are, and turned you, pict-
ure and all, over to the great Re-
toucher tor perfect finish and holier
life. The attention given the doctor
through a sermon of unusal length,
gave proof that we were not alone re-
ceiving golden nuggets from that
rich mind.
