. Unless, as in "T", the Quarterback
always handled the ball first

back or halfback some four yards to
his rear. Advantages to the "T" team
will not be tremendous, coaches figure.
The "upback"' still will not be eligible to
receive a forward pass (unless he whirls
away and achieves a yard of depth be-
fore the snap). It is merely anotherstring for the bow of

GO AWAY ... I
CAN'T HANDLE YOU!
But the quarterback still isn't eligible
to receive a forward pass
paired: (1) It is highly desirable that
. the quarterback himself do most of the
forward passing and (2) handle the ball
g on nearly every play, for in his clever-
- ness lies most of the formation's de-
ception.
Other rule changes that might be no-
ticed by the spectators: (1) "Lateral"
passes that accidentally go forward will
not wipe out the entire play as before
but instead will draw a five-yard penalty
from the spot of the pass; (2) four
timeouts, instead of three, will be grant-
ed each team per half, but timeout for
a player change will last only long
enough for the substitution to be com-
pleted.
Coaches Get the Word
Innovations will be thoroughly ex-
plained and the old rules reviewed in
the annual rules interpretation meeting
at Dallas Saturday and Sunday, with
Texas U.'s pontifical Dana Xenophon
Bible at the blackboard. Bible, second-
ranking in seniority only to Amos
Alonzo Stagg on the rules committee, is
the Southwestern states representative.
James H. Stewart, executive secretary
of the Southwest Conference, assigns
officials for conference teams' games
with the aid of preference cards sub-
mitted by the coaches. He is also sec-
retary-treasurer of the Southwest Foot-
ball Officials Association, of which Fort
Worth's Abb Curtis is president.
Golf in Late Afternoon
Twenty years ago Elmer Winn of
Plainview suffered a nervous breakdown.
He could not drive his car because of
a stiff shoulder and he had to have help
putting on his coat. He was forced to
turn his Ford agency over to his two
sons, Elgar and Virgil.
Winn had never played golf but he
had his physician's consent to start out
playing four holes. That was 18 years
ago. Today his score on the average or
18 holes totals in the neighborhood of
his 83 years and he has competed in the
last 12 annual Tri-State Golf Tourna-
ments.
the octogenarian has been featured in
Ripley's Believe-It-or-Not, and once he
challenged Ben Hogan to a game to
be determined by the one who could
shoot a score closest his age. Hogan
must have compared ages, for he did
not accept.-
