MOVIEMAN WRATHER Pappy Loses a 'Natural'
figure had been cut in half. Veteran
unemployment had receded from its
peak of 108,000 in June and has ranged
between 87,000 and 98,000 since that
time.
While both Dallas and Houston loud-
ly acclaimed their new businesses and
newspapers heralded a booming future
for both industrial centers, other cities
were getting a share of the new indus-
tries, were indulging in the highly-
competitive activity of trying to attract
firms to their localities.
Film Fledgling
Jack Wrather, Jr., soon-to-be-divorced
husband of Mollie O'Daniel, fell heir to
a multimillion-dollar East Texas oil for-
tune and now Hollywood has fallen heir
to Wrather.
The new Wrather Productions, In-
corporated, with offices in Dallas and
Hollywood, is:
Producing 16-mm color films for in-
24 AUGUST 46dustry, planning to branch into educa-
tional films, mapping an ambitious pro-
gram for pineducing major Hollywood
entertainment films,-all of which would
have been a 'natural' to Pappy's politic-
ing-planning to set up several new
radio stations in Texas and dickering
to buy a racetrack.
The major Hollywood film project
should get under way in October with
the shooting of the million-dollar produc-
tion of a Wrather-authored East Texas
oil field drama. Joan Crawford turned
down a $200,000 offer to participate be-
cause the feminine lead is not as heavily
featured as the masculine lead.
Wrather says he has tentatively lined
up Charles Bickford to star in the next
-and more ambitious-production, "In
His Steps," best. seller which hit the
high mark of 23,000,000 copies.
Another Hughes?
Hollywood is calling him a second
Howard Hughes, another Texan who
successfully applied his wealth to the
movie industry.RAUSCHER
