Six Latin Americans
What Texas' southern neighbors are
doing by way of art is on display in Dal-
las where the Museum of Fine Arts is
showing a loan exhibition entitled "Six
Latin American Painters" and featuring
six widely different points of view.
Four of the painters are hailed as
first rate performers; Rufino Tamayo of
Mexico, Roberto Matta Echaurren of
Chile, Carlos Merida of Guatemala, and
Rafael Moreno of Cuba. The others, not-
so-well-known Cubans Mario Carreno
and Cundo Bermudez, seem to have some-
thing real to say. Thirty-one-year-old
Bermudez turned to painting in 1937, is
largely self-taught.
Echaurren, internationally known as
Matta, is the only one of the six who
does not reveal any interest in Latin
American culture. This probably isn't
a commentary on the state of things cul-
tural in Chile, as this brilliant young
(34) artist has been living in New'Yorr
since 1939.
Tamayo's nine powerful paintings and
gouaches range from his somber "Ruins'
in 1935 to his brilliant "The Bird's Nest"
of 1945, touching on all important phases
of the artist's development in the decade.
Merida's 10 oils and gouaches com-
bine semi-abstract and surrealistic ele-
ments with forms derived from his
Maya-Quiche heritage.HUNGRY WOMAN . . . Matta Tops in Abstract Art
