Five Permits for Roselawn Homes Issued
Five permits totaling $38,500 j
were issued to B and W Construe- j
tion Co. last yve“k to erect new j
homes in Roselawn Addition, j
These certificates composed the j
bulk of week’s total amount of
$43,899.
"All of the dwellings • will be
constructed \on* Circle E. Three
will be $7,500 units with three
bedrooms and carport. Buyers for
the holies are F. T. Broussard, W.
Split-Level Type
Home In Top Favor
Merchant builders throughout !
the country are currently exam- !
ining their market with a critical j
eye to determine exactly where
the next preference of home buy-
ers in house design will center.
During the past two years, the
split-level arrangement has at-
tained tremendous popularity in
the northeastern states, has
spread to the middlemost in re-
cent months, and now is starting
to catch on in other areas.
In many large-scale home de-
velopments where builders offer
a choice between split-level de-
sign and the once tremendously
popular one-story ranch - stvle
dwelling, or the Cape Cod with
an expansion attic, the split-level
houses are outselling these other
types two-to-one.
Convenient Layout
Home buyers sav thev like the
additional living space, plus gar-
age and other facilities, thev ran
buy in a split-level house for only
a few' more dollars. They also like
the isolation of b< drooms on one
level: living room, dining room
and kitchen on another level: rec-
reation room or den and finished
laundry on a third level: and, in
many cases, a large basement on
a fourth level.
All of this is accomplished with-
out long flights of slops and ro-
R. Daundson and Robert E. Les-
ter
The other two units also will
have three bedrooms, but will j
have less floor space. They will j
sell for $7,000 each. Purchasers
for these are II. E. Sparks and |
Robert Lawson.
These units brought the new -
residential construction figure up
to $1,264,086, and the total num-I
ber of homes up to 176.
The business repair field made J
up the next largest amount of the ;
week’s figure. Three permits >
amounting to $4,253 were issued
in this category. The largest of
the three, a $2,537 permit, vskht j
to K. Pace at 605 Border St., to i
demolish an old shop and rebuild
steel frame with concrete floor,
Roy Kelly, 1012 Tenth St, took
out a $1,686 certificate to enlarge
his drive-in grocery and market. ■
The other permit was issued to
Ruth and Lillian Heges, 406 De-
cature, to repair roof on shop for
$40. _. _
i suiting tiresome stair-climbing.
Flexible Arrangement i
The much-sought flexibility of
room usage is present in split-
level homes. Although usually
planned as a recreation room, the
space alongside or to the rear of
the garage at grade level can be
made a second living room, a
forth bedroom, or devoted to any
desired use. Finishing the concrete
walls with wood panels or wall-
board, and covering the concrete
floor with tile creates a room as
1 comfortable and as attractive as
! any other room in the house.
! A majority of merchant build-
ers in the East likewise finish the
floor and walls of the laundry
space in similar fashion, and there
are frequent instances where
I laundry facilities have been con-
[ signed to the basement and the
laundry space on grade level
j turned into a small kitchen and
bath to provide an apartment
The remaining amount of $3,146
went into the home improvement
category. These permits were is-
sued to Herman Norsworthy, 1404
Curtis St., reside Residence with
asbestos; Sophie Harms, 506 Polk
St., reroof and reside garage apt.,
$1,000; E. D .Heartlield, 1110 17th
St., repair roof, $300; W. W. Ken-
nedy, 1502 Sholafs St., add car
port and concrete slab, $467; Fred
Smith, 1206 Fifth St., repair roof
and rebuild porch, $700; B. L.

One of the factors in the pur-
chase of upholstered furniture is
whether the upholstery fabric can
be cleaned at home: For the home
furniture-shampooing technique is
simple and avoids the inconven-
ience and expense of sending the
furniture to a commercial cleaner.
In shampooing upholstery at
; home, loose dust should be cleaned
from the furniture first by
vacuuming or brushing. Then as-
semble the other supplies needed
lather-type" shampoo, sponge or
brush, and two galvanized steel
: pails—and go to it.
Using a rotary beater, whip up
frothy suds in one pail. It’s the
j lather, not the water, that does
the cleaning. Fill the other pail
with clear rinse water. The gal-
vanized steel pails are recom-
mended because their size permits
! plenty of suds and rinse water,
two important factors in uphol-
1 sterv shampooing.
Dip the sponge in the suds and.
with circular motion, rub the
lather well into the fabric, cover-
ing a small area at a time. For
a rough textured material, it
may be better to use a brush in-
stead of a spong". Then squeeze
the sponge thoroughly in clear
water and wipe off the soiled
lather. If neeessary. repeat the
process until the area is soil-free
: — ami lie sure to overlap clean
sections in shampooing to avoid
i.du-
nning may lie speeded either
by using an electric fan or by
opening windows to allow- maxi-
mum air circulation. Fabric with
a nap should be brushed up as it
dries.
A word of warning: All furni-
ture upholstery cannot be cleaned
: in this fashion, so he sure about
your upholstery before shampoo-
ing it at home.

WASHINGTON, D ,C. (Spl) —
Prospective home buyers with an
eye on current design know that
open planning Is a featured at-
traction in an increasing number
of homes on today's market.
They know that this kind of in-
terior spaciousness is made pos-
sible by a roof and coiling system
that doesn’t need to be propped
up by interior walls.
BuJ^ it isn’t generally known
that Washington, D C., is the
birthplace of a popular trussed
rafter system for home building
that has made open planning a
reality on ’ such a wide scale
throughout the country.
Today’s flexibility in room lay-
out had its origin in basic en-
gineering for trussed rafters for
light cgnstruction that was car-
ried out here at the beginning of
the Civilian Conservation Corps
program in 1933. The Timber iin-
gineerim; Co., a -service mg anima-
tion of the lumber manufacturing
industry, was calhd upon to de-
vise an economic ul clear1 span
roof for demountable wooden.bar*
racks. TECO had previously de-
veloped improved designs and
techniques for long .; m timber
roof trusses used in heavy con-
struction.
The job for the timber en-
gineers, as the vast pu:-;--. u- hous-
ing program got under wav, was
to apply the same engineering
principles to residential construc-
tion.
