The Indians refused. The five
prisoners rushed out of the hos-
pital and shouted to a compound
housing 500 men. The others took
up the chant for the return of the
pnsonei and began scaling the
barbed wire fences.
The spokesman said the guards 1
repeatedly warned the pnsonei
to halt.
“We tried persuasion and they
would not listen.” he said. "The
chaps continued to scale the
barbed wire Our guards tried to
push and beat them back with
sticks hut the whole lot of them
kept on coming.
First we fired one shot in the
feet so the guards fired six more
shots. A total of only seven shots

Chief Gene Nance”
The new police chief said L. B.
Havden, acting chief the past sev-

old post as assistant police chief.
Hayden had served in that ca-

Sanders reminded that while
Nance had been police chief he
(Sanders 1 had been mayor direct-

“Most of the policemen here
now worked for me then." San-
ders continued. “There are some
good men in this department and
1 believe we can have excellent
law enforcement”
Sanders said he would confer
at once with Mavor Caillavet and
the Civil Serv ice Commission re-
garding policies
“There has been some talk that
some of the bovs would have to
leave the department, hut that is
not so." Sanders exclaimed. “I’m
not here to fire anyone.”
Sanders pleaded for coopera-
tion “With tile cooperation of the
people we can have an excellent
police department: without it 1
can do nothing."
No Malice
To the City Commission he said
