FIRE PREVENTION WEEK
OCTOBER 7 -13
Fire Prevention Week has been
scheduled for October 7-13, 1962
and during this week is the time
to recognize that Fires Repre-
sent Failure.
Every hour 66 American
homes are destroyed or damaged
by fire. Every hour and one-
quarter one person—most freq-
uently a child or elderly person
— dies in a dwelling fire. These
figures from the National Fire
Protection Association research,
are the measure of our failure to
heed fire hazards and measur-
able results of our failure to cor-
rect them.
West Fire Chief Willie Snok-
hous and West Fire Marshal
Frank J. Hlavaty urge all West
citizens to rid their homes and
businesses of fire hazards dur-
ing Fire Prevention Week. Be
prepared if fire should strike;
.informed when emergencies
W. Boggess spent this j arise.
Also smokers are urged to put
out matches and cigarettes be-
fore disposing of them out the
car window. Each year thought-
less smokers are responsible for I
more than 200,000 fires and1
about 1.200 people die in these
fires, according to National Fire*
Protection records.
Protect your family by mak-
ing life-saving escape plans now,
instruct your children and el-
derly persons the correct proced-
ure for escape if fire strikes at
your home. Fire safety needs
year-round emphasis to remind
people of the simple ways they
can keep themselves and their
belongings free from fire.
The causes of most home fired
are no mystery. Carelessly dis-
carded cigarettes are left to
smolder in chairs and other fur-
niture. a portable oil heater is
refilled while still lighted, elec-
trical circuits are overloaded
and overfused. Home fires occur
when the simple rules of safety
from fire are violated.
