Helping you make the fight
choice was the Department's Di-
vision of Water Pollution Con-
trol.
You bought seven Texas cities
— all of them under 25,000 pop-
ulation — gifts of comprehensive-
city plans. By following the
plans, cities can grow and ex-
pand in a healthy, orderly man-
ner without danger of slum for-
mation.
The bill came to $230,000. The
State Health Department helped
you shop for just the right plan
for each city.
It cost you $242,000 to buy a
half-million children the gift of
protection from polio this Christ
mas. If your own children, or
you yourself, were among them
you can consider yourself for-
tunate. Many disdained the gift,
and now Christmas holds no
meaning for them.
You Lought almost $15,000
worth of relief for many young-
I stars who would otherwise have
I tc suffer the pangs of tooth-
:: Your gift councellor in
this case was the Division of
Dental Health which paid the
tills in connection with 15 den-
tal clinics operating over the
State.
You and your neighbors gave
the gift of hope to 15,000 actual
or suspected victims of cancer
and heart disease. It cost you
$120,000 to support 20 different
cancer and heart clinics in
which dispair and anxiety were
eased or erased.
Your desire to give your fam-
ily the gift of good health also
took a negative turn. Health de-
partment inspectors hired by
you condemned almost 700,000
dunes of food and drugs as be-
unfit for human use.
You spent $3.5 million this
,7. r to see that health services
go right down to the com-
munity where your fam-
ily u U get to them. The mon-
ey paid 'or equipment and sup-
plies and ic” salaries of physi-
cians and n..:. - and sanitari-
ans.
t #
You maT lot know it, but
ills State I partment of Health
is a first ( iss entertainer as far
as mo.i pictures are concern-
ed.
Th films are not intended
sole!. for entertainment of
course they are all on educa-
tional health subjects slanted to
every age group from kinder-
gartners to oldsters.
During the last two years,
over 15,000 bookings have been
made of health department
films, and displayed to more
than one-and-a-half million
Texans.
Film library secretaries claim
that some of the more popular
films, such as "The High Wall”
— a mental health film dealing
with human prejudices — are
booked weeks in advance. It is
for this reason that a second,
third and fourth choice is re-
quested when making applica-
tion for film loans.
Careful records are kept of
each film, containing the num-
ber of showings and total au-
dience. Unfortunately about
half of the loanees do not fill
out the requested information
on the card enclosed with each
film. As a result the totals ac-
tually fall short of the whole
number of showings and audi-
ence covered with each film.
Some films are very popular.
“Preface to Life,” a film about
parent-child relationships for
showing adult audiences, had 26
viewings before 900 people dur-
ing September.
One of the headaches of the
film library is that loanees in-
sist on rewinding films after
use. Film librarians would rath-
er rewind the films themselves
in order to check for damage
and to clean the film at the
same time.
Often a costly film is damaged
during rewinding process when
done by unskilled operators.
Also, prompt return of a film is
important often because films
are “booked” continuously and
three to four days must be al-
lowed for delivery.
Even though some titles have
as many as 10 copies, there is
still a waiting list in the peak
seasons. Parent-Teacher groups
are high on the list of viewers
outside of school children.
Any responsible person or
group may borrow a Health De-
partment film for non-profit
showings. The only cost is the
return postage.
A catalog, listing and explain-
ing the nature of each film is
available from the Film Library,
State Health Department, Aus-
tin 1, Texas.
There are over 1,400 films to
choose from and all of them will
help you to live a healthier life.
It may make a difference to
all eteinity whether we do right
or wrong today. — James F.
Clarke.
