As I sit here nibbling on the remnants of
New Year’s Eve chex mix, I realize it does not
even taste good. So why do I eat it? The answer
is a mystery not even Nostradamus could have
predicted. 1 don’t really know. It’s not hunger,
it’s more likely stress, boredom, or any number
of other factors that affect the human mind.
The results, though, are easy to predict. Ex-
cess weight, and all the misery that goes along
with that. How do I know? Believe me, I am an
expert. More than 25 years of experience, read
every book, tried every diet,
know what to do, how to do it,
how much of this, how little of
that. If I could put it on a re-
sume’ it would be impressive...except for the fact that I have
no results to show for it all.
How did I get this way? It’s a mystery to me even though I
put every bite, sip, and tasty morsel past these lips. It’s a com-
bination of life, voices in my head from the past, and just mak-
ing poor food choices. Some people assume we are lazy, stu-
pid and lack self discipline - in my opinion, none of that ap-
plies here!
The real question is how do I stop it? I’ve lost weight be-
fore... even before I truly had a weight problem. Those who
desire to lose a few pounds so they can have a flatter stomach
irritate me.. .they don’t know how good they’ve got it! Like the
Nutrisystems lady who lost 28 pounds for a life changing ex-
perience - woohoo! I could lose that and no one would even
notice!! Needing to lose the equivalent of another adult human
being is a daunting task. Imagine carrying someone on your
back everywhere you go. Not to complain, I’ve been doing it
for a long time.
I think maybe I must be a little crazy to put myself up to the
scrutiny, allowing all to creep into this very personal part of my
life that will be no doubt a battle to the death.. .me or these ex-
tra pounds. I have to find a way to overcome the fear, or what-
ever it is that holds me back, to take control and escape the snare that binds me
to the past and all my previous failures. This time, I’m in it to
WIN!
SO! This is a New Year’s resolution. In a world bom-
barded with fast food and a fast paced life and the need to
strive for perfection, many people face these same challenges
on a smaller scale (no pun intended). I made big changes in
my life last year, and I feel the need for that to continue. No
more sidestepping the weight issue, I have to face it - head
on. It’s not like I can hide it anyway, so why not put it all on
the line in a very public forum? So, you get to read about it.
Maybe some will find it humorous, others encouraging, and
there may be some who sneer. This series may provide oth-
ers a little encouragement, some to be a little more compas-
sionate, smile, or say hello. You’d be surprised how often big
people are ignored, or how people suddenly don’t even know
you when their other friends are around.
I’m mostly a happy person, so I don’t expect this to be
dark and moody. I expect it to be a journey that others (hopefully) will find in-
teresting, and maybe can apply some things to their own lives - or realize they
are NOT the only one that has this same struggle. A daily struggle - we ALL
have one of some sort, don’t we? This one is mine. And I’m hoping by sharing
it with you, it will help me remain motivated, focused, and on track, even
though I know it will be a long, difficult journey.
Starting next week, I will post my results weekly - how much I’ve lost,
gained, or if 1 stay the same. My personal trainer, Michelle Baumgardner of
Panther Powerhouse, will be keeping me honest by monitoring the results as
well as helping me stay on track with my diet, exercise, and any hurdles I may
encounter. So, here we go!
