At Close of Day
'by O.fawrencc Tfaujthorne .—~ ^
There’s a certain tender feelin’
That I notice comes a-stealin’
’Round my heart and never seems to go away
Till the chores have been completed
And once more we all are seated
To enjoy the restful closin’ of the day.
Darkness somehow always finds us
In a state o’ mind that binds us
To the fireside we have learned to know so well;
Home to us is still a treasure
And we get a heap o’ pleasure
From its comforts, more than tongue can ever tell.]
Folks who cherish home and stay there.
Those who eat an’ sleep an’ play there,
Are the folks who know what happiness can be.
Oh there’s nothing half so pleasin’
When the world outside is freezin'
As this cozy nook that love keeps warm for me.
When old-age at last has found me,
Wien its shadows creep around me-
And life’s sunshine slowly f.y!e> an’ disapiiears,
Then w ith heart still free from sadness
> In this home.wjiere all is gladness
I’ll enjoy the peaceful twilight of the years!

THE CHRONICLE It is reported that one of the
I fastidious newly married ladies
| of this town kneads bread with
tier gloves en. This incident may
J be somewhat peculiar, but there
are others. The editor of this
paper needs bread with his
ishoes on; he needs bread with
his shirt on; he needs bread with
his pants on; and unless some of
the delinquent subscribers to
the “Old Rag of Freedom” pony
up before long, he will need
bread without a damn thing on,
and Texas is no Garden of Eden
in the winter time

Business picks up when you
pick it up with good advertising.
After religion has been used
as a cloak, it isn’t any good as a
shroud.
Every good word you say for
Carrollton will make someoue
else think more of the town.
Are you living up to your last
year’s resolution as to when
you'd do this year’s Christmas
buying?
Day by day, in every way,
Carrollton is getting better and
better. Our people are forget-
ting all about the political strife
of last summer’s campaign and
our minds are turning toward
tjie problem of making this a
better and bigger town,
Guess It If You Can
The
Blue
Circle
By ELIZABETH JORDAN
Even if you are a pro-
fessional reader of mys-
tery stories, you will
find one in this tale that
will test your guessing
ability. It seems occult,
but turns out very nat-
urally. On the homeo-
pathic principle of like
cures like, the hero suf-
fering from a case of
nerves, is put up against
a scries of nerve-wrack-
ing experiences. They
cure him, but that is
not all of the story. It
contains humor along
with thrilling situations.
The entire affair takea
place in a charming old
country house among
delightful people, and
there is a splendid
love story.

Will Start as a Serial in
Carrollton will soon be in the
midst of Christmas buying. And
as is the custom of local mer-
chants they have stocked their
shelves with a wide variety of
articles from which the shop-
pers may make their selections
knowing they are getting just
as good merchandise at just as
reasonable prices as may be ob-
tained in the larger, cities.
Christmas lists are already, in
the making as all realize the
early shopper gets the choice
selections. Those who wait until
the last minute to make fcheir
Christmas purchases undergo
many inconveniences w h ich
could be avoided if they started
| buying earlier in the season.
.To wait till the last minut& also
I works a hardship on the clerks
as well as on the buyer. Hun-
dreds of Car roll ton people should
start, their Christmas buying
within the next few days.
WE ARE 21 YEARS OLD.
This week we are celebrating
two important events. It is now
the time of year that our
thoughts turn to turkey, punkin
pie, cranberries and the likes,
and good Lord hasbeengenerous
to us the past year and we are
thankful for the favors that we
.have received.
■ Another event that we are
i celebrating is the 21st birthday
| of the Carrollton Chronicle. For
21 years this paper has been
read by the good people of this
community and they have de-
pended on it to keep up with the
progress and happenings of this
part of the county and the mer-
chants hnve used it ns the med-
ium of reaching the peoplo with
their messages of advertising.
During this time several differ-
ent editors have been at the
helm, and the present editor has
enjoyed eighteen months of var-
ied prosperity and we hope to
enjoy many more, for the Chron-
icle has now attained the age of
accountability, according to the
laws of the state, and we hope
that the next 21 years will still
find the Chronicle doing her bit
toward the betterment of Car-
rollton and community as she
(lias in tlie ^as»i 21 }cars.
