Sixty-second Legislature-Third Called Session
AUSTIN, TEXAS, THURSDAY, JUNE 15, 1972
PROCEEDINGS

(Senate Concurrent Resolution 24
Whereas, Citizens of the State of Texas were greatly saddened by the untimely
death, on Sunday, June 11, 1972, of the Reverend B. M. Jordan, father of State
Senator Barbara Jordan of Houston; and
Whereas, The Reverend Mr. Jordan suffered a stroke shortly after witnessing his
daughter sworn in as Governor of Texas-for-a-Day on Saturday, June 10. 1972; he
passed away only 24 hours after seeing his daughter become the first black woman
in history to be the chief executive of a state in our nation; and
Whereas, The Reverend Mr. Jordan had been ill and had a heart condition, but he
wanted so very much to see his daughter sworn in as Governor of Texas; he did see
that historical event, and it marked one of the happiest and proudest days of his
more than 69 years on this great earth; and
Whereas, A retired Baptist minister, the Reverend Mr. Jordan served as pastor at
both the Mt. Pilgrim Baptist Church in Thompson and Oak Hill Baptist Church in
Pennington until his resignation because of ill health in 1971; and
Whereas, B. M. Jordan was not just the father of a woman who has given hope
and inspiration to the people of Texas, but he was a man who gave hope and inspira-
tion to the many thousands of persons to whom he ministered; he gave advice and in-
spiration to his daughter, without which she might never have achieved her position
as Texas' first black woman Senator and chief executive; and
Whereas, This distinguished gentleman was a kind and loving citizen, a true man
of God, whose life will long be remembered by his family, friends and fellow citizens
as an example of the way in which all should conduct their lives ; and
Whereas, The Reverend B. M. Jordan is survived by his wife; his daughter, Senator
Barbara Jordan; and his daughters, Mrs. John McGowan and Mrs. Bennie Creswell, all
of Houston; and
Whereas, The Texas Legislature wishes to pay tribute to the Reverend B. M. Jordan
for his many contributions and guidance to the citizens of Texas, and to extend
sympathy to Senator Jordan and the members of her family in their time of sad-
ness; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the Senate of the 62nd Legislature, 3rd Called Session, the House of
Representatives concurring, That this Resolution stand in memory of the Reverend
B. M. Jordan, outstanding citizen, respected and beloved gentleman, and dedicated
minister; and, be it further
Resolved, That official copies of this Resolution be prepared for Senator Barbara
Jordan and the members of her family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the
Legislature of the State of Texas.

Reverend W. H. Townsend, Chap-
lain, offered the invocation.
On motion of Senator Aikin and
by unanimous consent, the reading of
the Journal of the proceedings of yes-
terday was dispensed with and the
Journal was approved.
Senate Resolution 2
Senator Hightower offered the fol-
lowing resolution:
Whereas, More than 85,000 dele-
gates are presently attending EXPLO
72 in the City of Dallas; and
Whereas, This week-long evangel-
istic training conference under the
guidance of its Honorary Chairman,
the Reverend Dr. Billy Graham, seeks
to create a great movement of world
history through the young people of
this world; and

Whereas, The Texas Senate ap-
plauds and encourages all those in-
volved in this worthy undertaking;
and
Whereas, We are pleased to have
a staff member of EXPLO 72, Mr.
Robert Pittinger, with us today in
the Senate; now, therefore, be it
Resolved, That Mr. Robert Pittin-
ger be invited to address the Texas
Senate, 62nd Legislature, 3rd Called
Session, at 11:45 a.m. on June 15,
1972.

The resolution was read and was
adopted.
The President recognized Senator
Hightower and requested that he es-
cort Dr. Charles Le Maistre, Chan-
cellor of the University of Texas, and
Mr. Robert Pittinger to the Presi-
dent's Rostrum.
Senator Hightower presented Dr.
Le Maistre, who introduced Mr. Pit-
tinger to the Members of the Senate.
Mr. Pittinger then addressed the
Members' of the Senate concerning
EXPLO 72 and invited the Members
to attend the conference being held
in Dallas.
