FINE BAKING by'Bud'Wilson
“I can’t think of any New Year resolutions. We already use
only WILSON’S PRODUCTS!’
farms in 1947 despite the hand-
icaps of labor shortage and
‘Old Man Weather’,” says John
H. Cheek, Soil Conservationist
with the Soil Conservation
Service.
Mr. Cheek lists the following
conservation practices that,
were applied in 1947 by 156
cooperating farmers:
Contour cultivation, 1,667
acres; cover crops, 550 acres;
crop residue management,
a 183 acres; range properly
stocked, 18,076 acres; seeding
pastures , 1,550 acres; farm
ponds 3; terracing, 11 miles;
vegetative waterways 6 acres;
planting permanent hay, 100
acres; clearing, 400 acres; pas-
ture fertilization, 1,283 acres;
rodent control 2,900 acres;
mowing, 3,850 acres.
Mr. Cheek said that, “the
farmers who are cooperating
with rhe Soil Conservation
Districts’ program, in an all-
out effort to save their soil,
are reaping increasing rewards
in bigger and better crops as
the years go by and are en-
joying more and more of the
good things of life because of
their faithful stewardship of
the .land.”
He suggests that all land-
owners include the following
in their New Year’s resolutions:
“I will do my best to control
erosion and improve my soil
in 1948 so that the future gen-
erations will not be naked and
hungry because of my neglect.”
