It was indeed a pleasant surprise
that awaited our pastor and his bride
on their home-coming Tuesday night.
Members of Club Nr. 1 had the parson-
age open and a choice meal prepared
which was enjoyed by both pastor and
wife. Club No. 1 deserves special praise
for this bit of thoughtfulness. While
eating Rev. Newman was informed that
he and the bride were invited to see
some friends who were waiting in the
church, and when the two entered thev
found several hundred people assembled
to extend congratulations.
Last Sunday's services were up to
tbe standard in every respect, sending
all home feeling that a blessing had
been received ,and tbe time well spent.
Our pastor will fill the pulpit at both
services on Sunday.
Our employment bureau is a greater
success than we had even hoped tor
and through the efforts of our pastor
many members of our race are securing
decent employment. Rev. Newman
does not accept anything for his service
but your gooJ will, neither does he ask
if you are a Baptist before securing
work for yea. If you think that such
a spirit deserves your encouragement
just let us hear from you.

ZION NOTE8.
A great educator once described edu-
cation as useiul knowledge. Following
his lead, we may be allowed to state
that our conceptions of a sermon
amount to a single phrase—Religion
taught so that it will do practical good.
Rev, E. D. W. Jones's topic, "Death in
the pot," taken from II. King?, iv.. 40,
was by him explained in all the varia-
tions of the possibilities of the phrase
as it involved local and racial circum-
stances. Society, customs, habits, in-
clinations, all came under the dissecting
influence of the sermon of Sunday eve-
ning, Nov, 8, and in the same way and
by the same process many pet vices and
petty social virtueF—so called—found
themselves weighed and found wanting.
Once in a while we need to have truth
told us plainly about ourselves, and in
this regard tbe sermon referred to per-
formed that unpleasant duty most
heroically. Incidentally.it acted like a
tonic, and we who were present should
feel gratefut for its application.
On Sunday, Dec. 5. the topic will be
taken from Ezekiel's vision—dry bones
in the valley—an interesting subject.

Older will be presented.
On Tuesday evening, December 14, an
entertainment will be given by Miss L.
Miller and Miss Mercedes Hill, the
purpose being to raise funds for a free
Christmas tree for our local kiddies. A
nice programme is billed for the eve-
ning. We are boosting the thing for its
value both in its programme and for its
good intention. We expect and request
unlimited support.
BETHEL NOTE8.
Financial, social, and spiritual activi-
ties were more pronounced this past
week than usual. The fair brought
together many friends that had not for
some time met at Bethel church to hear
the excellent programme e ich night
and thereafter to exchange greetings.
Wednesday night the choir delighted
the audience with its concert, as it
always does.
Thursday evening the young peop'e,
led by Cornelius Anderson, rendered a
highly profitable programme. The trio
(C. Anderson, H. Antonio and a Bweet-
voiced soldier) was cheered constantly.
Mrp. Ford in a reading, Mrs. Hart and
Mr. Anderson in select rjadings. O. E.
McKaine aud Mr. Harbert in humorous
recitations, Miss Harbert in a piano
solo, and Miss Ford in a beautiful solo
furnished an entertainment satisfactory
to the most delicate in taste.

auspices of the stewardesses, with Mrs.
