Dear Hellcat Family,
In this month’s Hellcat News, you will
find the ballot for this year’s election of the
Executive Council members. The bios for
the candidates are also included. Due to a
fortunate, last-minute change of events, Ed
Pierce has graciously agreed to stay on as
Treasurer. We have two candidates for two upcoming Director
openings, Mary Anne Delker and Bettie Schultz, a candidate
for Vice-President, Geoff Lackey, and a candidate for
President, yours truly. Please take a few minutes to complete
and return the ballot.
Although thisyear’s election turned outto be straightforward
in the end due to an unopposed slate, there was a potential for
the Association to be faced with a challenging predicament had
Ed not offered to remain in his current position as treasurer.
There were no other individuals willing to step-up and serve
in that role. I think this should be a wake-up call to all of
us that active participation is needed by the membership of
this organization, especially its Legacy members. The 12th
Armored Division Association has existed for as long as it has
because of the efforts and service of its members and without
that, the future does not look good.
As a follow-up to something that I mentioned in last month’s
column, I have found out more information about The Battle
of the Colmar Pocket reunion that will be held in Arlington,
VA, on Dec. 5-8, 2013. I have been exchanging messages
with Monika Stoy, who is the President of the Outpost Europe
of the Society of the 3rd Infantry Division. She informs me
that this year’s event will be the fourth one held and that they
would love to have participation from the veterans of the 12th
Armored Division. The agenda for the reunion can be found
elsewhere in this issue of the Hellcat News.
Monika also let me know that any honorably discharged
veteran who fought in France during WWII is eligible to
receive France’s highest honor, the Legion of Honor. This
may be old news to some of you, but if you need additional
information as well as the application for that award, please
let me know. Monika is happy to deliver it to the French
Embassy in nearby Washington, DC, for processing.
Since I’m writing this column over Easter weekend, I am
reminded of charity to those in need and goodwill towards
each other, which are practices that translate universally,
regardless of religion or beliefs. Although he certainly doesn’t
qualify as needy, our own Otis Shull [C/56], who recently
celebrated his 90th birthday, has been experiencing some

It has been both spoken and written that history repeats
itself. This is true relative to our unit and its Hellcat News
column. “What am I attempting to convey?” you ask. Simply
this: Last evening I read Fred Stillman’s January 1992
column, and even at that time he was encountering difficulty
in getting our members to contribute information of any sort
for the column. It is no different today, Fred, and with our
membership dwindling as well as aging, the problem has
become even more dire. I deplore opening our column on a
sour note, but I am not one for gilding the lily.
Thank Heavens, Clint Seitz, one of our true stalwarts,
saved the day by providing this historical and interesting story
for all of us.
I HAD MET FRITZ KUHN
A documentary on the History Channel about Fritz Kuhn
prompts me to recall a personal experience which was not told
in the story:
Many civilians in our country were hysterical about the
resident Japanese and Germans and their movements and
activities in the early days of WWII - and rightfully so. With the
possibility of a major attack by the Japanese on the west coast
and the German submarines hounding and sinking shipping
on the east coast and Gulf of Mexico, people had reason to be
nervous, which later generations fail to understand.
