life is real.
It doesn’t matter that the lights
glitter and blink nervously and the
tinsel droops tiredly on the tree
while grim-visaged shoppers push
and shove angrily, it’s still the
Christmas season. The time when
the world celebrates the birth of
Jesus.
The incessant clamor of familiar
Christmas tunes locksteps across
the air waves while news report-
ers point out resignedly that
murders and traffic deaths art*
setting records. Former Beatle
John Lennon is shot to death by a
“wierdo”. Near record numbers
of unemployed gulf down their
pride and look to Welfare for their
Santa Claus.
Life is ever real.
It’s like this.
Her name is important but only
because it is her name. You would
not recognize it so it would add
nothing to this telling. I don’t
really know her. Oh, I know
something of her life-story and-
having read some of her poetry-
something of her life hidden. But
I don’t know her. Not the way I
know you.
I tell you that in preparation for
sharing some of her unpublished
poetry. It speaks for itself.
espero
alone I draw my first breath
of life
alone I struggle, gasp my last
life ebbs into the ending
is not the ending the
beginning?

the Angels wept, their tears
embraced all mankind
and Man raped the moisture
without thought, praise or
thanks
I was glad when the telephone
shattered the mood. And even
happier when I heart! your voice
with its joyful lilt and even more
pleased as you shared your good
news.
When you talked about your
appreciation for just being, I
began to feel a lift. Then when
you explained you were calling as
a first step in sharing your
blessings, I was moved.
listening to you, remembering
the embracing despair that en-
veloped my very soul as I read the
poetry and looked into the depths
of the writer’s sense of lostness, I
remembered it is Christmas.
It is a time of celebration and
joy.
FTir some of us.

be. Who can let it be.

Channel Work
Continues After
August Storm
Shoaling of the Gulf Intracoastal
Waterway in southern I^aguna
Madre and the Mansfield Channel
resulting from Hurricane Allen
last August, will be removed
under a Corps of Engineers $1.9
million contract announced recent-
ly. The 18 miles of shoaled
channel was initially reopened to
a depth of 9 feet after the sotrm,
and this latest contract will
resotre the channel to its author-
ized 12 foot depth.
The maintenance dredging work
is scheduled for completion in
March, 1981.
Other channel maintenance
needed as a result of the storm is
und rway at Port Aransas and
FTeeport, with hopper dredges
being used to re-establish the full
channel dimensions that were
reduced by the storm action. The
Matagorda Ship Channel entrance
was also shoaled, and is being
maintained by a private hopper
dredge, while the other ship
channels are being repaired by
Corps-owned dredges brought
from New' Orleans and Jackson-
ville for the emergency work.
The Corpus Christi Ship Chan-
nel entrance at Port Aransas was
shoaled to a 28 foot clearance,
and the dredges have been
working to restore the authorized
45 foot depth and widen the
channel to again allow two-way
ship passage at the mouth.
