WOMEN DOING THEIR SHARE
X RANADA'S impress on the
■ traveler’s mind must always
L T be enchanting, hut It Is shurp-
er when the great home of
[ the Moors is approached from Almeria
through the grim country southeast of
Granada. Contrast could go no fur-
ther. The train on tin* slow and doubt-
ful Southern railway, writes Lawrence
Weaver in Country Life, groans labor-
iously up tlio stoop track from the
dusty and rather dilapidated port of
Almeria through an arid and moun-
tainous district. One can see here the
processes of creation—chaotic seas of
mud contained in a series of basins
by encircling Hills, heaving like an an-
gry sea, and then, as it were, frozen as
they chafed Into a desolation of yel-
low-brown waves, gigantic and retain-
ing tho memory of turbulence. Only
where rare rivers bring them refresh-
ment do olive plantations and vine-
yards give livelihood to villages with
khaki-colored waits and roofs which
scarcely make themselves seen against
the prevailing tone and desolation.
The sense of being in a prehistoric
land Is heightened by the cave dwell-
ings in tile sides of hills of muddy
rock, often showing no more than a
door and chimney, but sometimes—
with typical Spanish brnvura—a rough
eolonaded portico planted against tho
face of the hill. Many of these cave
dwellings are of recent burrowing, but
some must be of immemorial age.
■ private hands, has escaped the zeal of
i i official architects. Moreover, tt is the
perfect type of a Moorish country
■ house of moderate size, Imllt without
; reference to the needs of defence, and
. girt about with gardens in which de-
| sign and the configuration of the site
i have conspired to create cool retreats
; of extraordinary beauty. Not only
does the Genera life claim the singular
Interest of having been designed ori-
ginally for his own home by one of
the architects employed on tin* Alham-
bra, but it is a tine (lower of mingled
Italian ami Moorish art: in Its own
right.
Beauties of the Gardens.
Tarts of the gardens, and not the
least interesting, defy the camera.
Trees and shrubs have been allowed
to grow somewhat too freely, ami the
fine lines of pool and wall in most of
the upper compartments are now
veiled fn a green luxuriance. This de-
stroys in a photograph the underlying
form which the eye is able to trace.
Moreover, it Is impossible to take any
general photograph which would give
uny idea of the variety given to tin*
scheme by an utmost bewildering
change of levels. The gardens step
down the hill from east to west and
there are other variations. The lower
walled garden, for example, is much
lower than the level of the picture
gallery. From the windows of the lat-
ter we look down on its round pool
ami low well-clipped box hedges
hounded fin tin* north side by an open
arcade which frames the view.
Tne Gencrallfe is approached by a
long avenue and we enter at tin* {
I southern end of the court of the acc-
< I ii i 11 or canal. The channel is hor- ;
dered by fountain jets and Is no more |
than four feet In width. At either end
is a small, round pool, and the water,
| brought to tin' northern pool from the
head of tin' water supply up the hill,
Hows southward and then to tin* lower
levels. The northern block of build-
ing is reached by ii dellghtf'!' cloister
along the west side of the court. About
halfway along tin* cloister is a nilrn-
dor or outlook chamber from which
we look down on to the lower gardens
north and south of It, and across to
the Alhambra, best seen from her**.
Tile paths In tin* Canal court are of
pebbles laid In diamond patterns. The
detail of the cloister may well lie of
the fourteenth century and prepares
| us for tlie superb design and workimifi-
j ship of the great portico at tho north
end of the Cnnni court.
Cypress and Cedar Gardens.
A few steps up bring us to a mlrn-
dor on the upper lloor of the building
w liifh here runs eastward. From Imth
levels we look southward over tie* !
Cypress garden, which takes Its mini'*
from one great tree that Inis lost Its
fellows and does not look as though it
would live forever. Here nre a pool j
and luxuriant hedges. About twenty l
steps take us up to tin* Cedar garden, !
and from this level we can climb the j
bill to the intruder by two series of
stairways, giving across to fart iter j
hedged gardens sef oi;L fit every sort \
of geometrieal pattern. At every turn |
there are fountains, served from the
head water by ingenious pipes ntiVF>
canals. The Cypress garden Is divided 1
from the eoiirt of the canal by a build- I
lug which serves os a summer resl-
detice. It Is dear that the Gencrallfe
gardens had a great reputation ns

Sure Death to Flies.
With the sound of the busy city
droning an nccompunlmont to their
death struggles, some 500 of the most
carefully nurtured flics that ever flew
were executed in n hath of alcoholic
gas in New York recently.
The terrible massacre was the coup
d'etat, the concluding triumph, of
Messrs. Iteaumont Alexander and L.
Gossett, late of London, England, who
have come to America with a gaseous
mixture which they say will reduce
,*the fly population to nil and create
havoc among all other insects.
For weeks they labored to collect
flics to prove the truth of their ns-
•^sertlons. They searched stables,
sought the recesses whore the fly Is
supposed to have* Its winter abode, and
offered real money for a single fly or
a pair. The gas. which has an alco-
holic base, first lntoxicntes the fly and
then paralyzes him, leaving him with
his sensory nerves useless, so that lie
falls to the ground and Is dead.
