Tammy
Smith with the Bearette probably go $2.5 million. I
Academic Athletic Award yould say that is probably
and Alustrpe -Greene with thetop,"heanswered.
Veenstra estimated^ a
new high school would cost
around $4.5 million.
"You're dreaming again,"
he told Mrs. Homuth..."It
looks like the board is
trying to get everything at
once. We cannot do it. The
bottom line is we needed to
get started on something
realistic and then we can
come back and ask for
more. I was under the im-
pression that a junior high
was our greatest need.
Now we get a completely
new turnaround" from the
board. "We can't cure all
the ills at onetime."
Trustees asked the
audience for reaction to
Haisler's plan and almost
all was favorable. "I think
it's the correct approach,"
said High School Principal
Jimmy Stacy.
Trustee Jack Hancock
Jr. said the district needed
to compile a 15-year-plan
on its building needs so
that elements would fit as
they are built.
"It's hard to project
growth," retorted
Shirocky. "You need to
think about today and the
next five years. You can't
plan well beyong that
point."
No Endorsement
Veenstra's idea to lease a
building to ease the im-
mediate problems-at the
junior high did not get an
endorsement from other
trustees.
Mrs. Homuth pointed
out the owner could move
the building once a lease
was up and the school
district would have
nothing to show for its
lease payments. "That's a
last resort. That's why
school districts don't like
it," she said.
"The way I see it, that's
the last option we've got,"
said Veenstra.
"What kind of a
building are you talking
about?" Mrs. Carter asked
him.
"A first class building-
brick construction," he
said. "To float a bond

the Bearette Achiever
Award.
Miss Greene won the
award for participating in
three sports: volleyball,
basketball and track.
Two players, Joe Vallejo
and Donny Glasgow
shared the baseball team's
most valuable player
award.
Also honored at the
banquet was Lincoln
Farris, who was awarded a
plaque in honor of his an-
n football games for 32
years.
"With a lease building,
wouldn't you have to also
raise taxes?" asked Mrs.
Homuth.
"Yes, perhaps 8 to 10
percent," said Veenstr^,
but not as much as would
be required to pay offybon-
ds and interest. "It all
depends on how liberal you
want to be with the
dollar," he added.
Next Budget
, Veenstra said it might be
possible to get some of the
money for a lease out of
current district operating
funds. "There are places
we can cut it when we make
up the budget this sum-
mer," he said.
"Do you mean someone
I would be willing to put up a
building on school proper-
ty?" asked Haisler.
"Yes sir,'/ said Veen-
stra. "It's being done quite
a bit now on account of
people (schoold district
voters) not wanting to
raise taxes" through bond
issues.
Hestand told- the board
"Within two weeks we can
tell how much square feet is
needed, look af the land
area and how functional"
a building would be
required for a new high
school.
