THE BASTROP ADVERTISER AND COUNTY NEWS
pH*3-\
By Ellen Moore
) jAn Easter Pageant is
coming to the First Baptist
Church of Bastrop for the
first time on Easter Sunday
evening, April 3, at 7 p.m.,
ainid it promises to be quite
an elaborate production. It
was written and will be
directed by Melvin Brad-
ford, who is Director of the
Singles Department at the
church, and runs the Water
Refining & Distilling Co.
here jn Bastrop.
Bradford, who grew up
in Bastrop, then moved
back here about one-and-
a-half years ago,"3 said that
he had done the pageant
three times before in
Maryland, but the
Maryland experience just
gave him ideas. "This is
going to be a much better
productifln, a more.)
elaborate one," he
promised.1 "It- will have
better special effects, and a
better soundtrack, one I
pUt together."
The pageant, which
begins with the triumphant
entry- of Christ into
Jerusalem and ends with
the Ascension, is a very
ambitious undertaking,
Bradford acknowledged.
It has 10 different scenes
with three major changes
of backdrop. It is basically
an adult production, he
added, with 25 actors, and
an additional 10 people in-
volved behind the scenes.
Bradford added that it
includes very graphic por-
trayals of the Crucifixion
and Resurrection, and
mentioned that the
production needs a large
auditorium for the perfor-
mance.
, The large and elaborate
backdrops have been pain-
ted by Lucille Ash primarily,
he added, and the tremen-
dous job on costumes and
props have been under-
taken by Lynn and Ann
Johnson, Mona Trombley
andEulalaBussa.
Work on the pageant
began right after Christmas,
he continued. Bradford
said he had wanted to do
^the pageant for some time,
'and when he mentioned it
to his Singles Department
group, they responded en-
thusiastically. "It's been a
real exciting experience,"
he.continued, adding that
"everybody's done a lot in
various ways," and the
whole church has given
tremendous support and is
very excited about it. y
Following the Bastrop
production, the group will
travel to Dallas on April 9
to give the pageant at the
Elmwood Baptist Church,
where Bastrop's minister,
John Glasgow, was once
pastor. On April 10, they,; t
will again present thfc
pageant in Smithville at th?

ney retired earlier this
month. Sheriff Tommy
Moseley will have to hire
another man before he has

five deputies budgeted for
it by the Commissioners

Bastrop County0 Com-
missioners voted Monday
to leave the Precinct 4
Constable position open
after Vernon Blisard leaves
the post on April 1.
The decision, suggested
by Precinct 4 Commission-
er Marvin Markert, was
based on the fact that the
county has had to go over
the budget in several areas.
Markert said the county
could take the money it
would normally spend on
the constable's office and
use if for something else.
The constable position
will not be filled until the
next general county elec-
tion, which will be held in
November 1984.
The vacancy will leave
the delivering of court pa-
pers in Precinct 4 up to the
Sheriffs office or other
constables, who cannot be
required by County Com-
missioners to work outside
th'eir individual precincjs.

Austin hospital.

Senate within a week or so.
However, officials of
the McDade Independent
School District are
threatening to oppose the
bill in the legislature since
they would like a larger
slice of the money coming
out of it.
A surprise developed
Monday night as officials
of local entities met with
Sharp and Rep. Robert
Saunders, when it was
discovered that ap-
proximately 800 acres in
the Lexington School
District is within Bastrop
County. According to the
way the bill is worded, that
district would get a cut of
the funds.
Basically, the bill
distributes the money as
follows; 35% to Bastrop
County, 15% to be
distributed among Elgin,
Bastrop and Smithville,
and 50% to be divided
among the Bastrop, Elgin,
Smithville, Lexington and
McDade Independent
School Districts. Each
school district would
receive at least 10% of the
school revenue, a
provision designed to
protect McDade which in-
structs approximately two
percent of the county's
students in its classrooms.
But its officials have
asked that the minimum be
set at 20%, since ap-
proximately 40% of the
mining is expected to be
done within the boundaries
of its district.
Officials of the Bastrop
and Elgin School Districts
said that such a division
would be unfair.
