New life for old signs

Patterson particularly cher-
ishes signs of firms or brand
names that have vanished.
Such as Magnolia, Sinclair,
Champlin, Phillips 77, Cos-
den and Texas Pacific
Gasoline.
FINDS
Where does he find the
signs?
Patterson says he's had
luck on the roofs of old
buildings in Smith ville and
elsewhere in Bastrop Coun-
ty. Signs may lurk in sheds
or pens and old pumps are
sometimes abandoned out
side barns. But his biggest
hauls have come from
outside the county, he said.
I bought 30 or 40 sight
unseen from a man in Ft.
Worth who had found them
in Oklahoma City," said
Patterson.
"I got seven Humble ovals
in that bunch. Right now I
have only two left." Humble
signs are popular because
the company started in
Texas and changed its name
to Exxon.
The larger signs are
selling for around $150.
"They're bound to go up,"
says Patterson. Small signs
Hawaii trek
still open
Is there a Hawaiian
holiday in the Bastrop High
School Stage Band's future?
The next few weeks will
tell as the band members,
their parents and supporters
try to raise around $6,000 so
that some 19 members can
go to Honolulu to compete in
a band contest.
The trip is scheduled for
Dec. 26 Dec. 30. The band
would perform at least
twice.
The students would be
housed at the University of
Hawaii.
To help raise the needed
money, a raffle appeal
started this week. A 19-inch
color TV, AM/FM eight-
track cassette and a digital
clock will be given to
winners.
Tickets are $1 each or $5
for a book of six tickets.
Band members and their
parents are selling tickets
and they can also be bought
at First National and
Citizens State Banks, accord
ing to Rind Director Ernest
Biggers. Tickets can also be
obtained by phoning him at
321 6495.

that were posted on pumps
or other spots range from
$22 to more than $50,
depending on their age and
condition.
"There wasn't a market
before for the big signs,"
admits Patterson.
"But I had a feeling about
them myself a few years
back."

Today there are publi-
cations listing globes on
pumps, many with long out
of commission names, and
other "visible gasoline
parts."
Patterson has owned his
Alum Creek ranch for 20
years and moved here
finally, giving up his
trucking business in San
Antonio. With his wife Betty
he is the congenial lord of a
little empire of stores he
started five years ago, his
and those belonging to
others that rent from him.
"It's kind of like a museum
here," he says.
We get a lot of lookers but
only a small perccnt of
buyers. But we like that."
Why on earth?
"What would I do if
everything was all bought
up?" he said.
As for his own interests in
guns, signs and other
passionately cherished
items, he says:
"My real pleasure is
acquiring them.
"Once I acquire them, I fall
out of love with them."
