We sincerely hope that
everyone had a wonderful
Thanksgiving.Turkey and all
the trimmings. I went down
south, but not quite south
enough...the cold north wind
followed us all the way to
South Padre and brought
rain with the cold...quite
unusual for that part of
Texas. Had some pretty
days too, so got to go to
Mexico and see the sights of
the city south of the border.
It always amazes me at
the number of cars and
traffic on the International
Bridge....when they say they
need another one, they
really aren't kidding. Traffic
snarls and people wait. It is
always a great experience to
cross the bridge and see the
change of culture. If you
think it's bad to drive in
Bastrop, you should try your
luck across the bridge,
however many drivers are
polite and the first to the
crossing gets to cross...a
very simple rule. Browns-
ville, one of Texas' oldest
cities has many beautiful
homes and one of the finest
zoos in the U.S. Snowbirds
are arriving daily and
business is really beginning
to pick up.
YACHT CLUB
While dining at the
Yacht Club in Port Isabel I
was reading the souvenir
menu and it was very
interesting to learn that the
club was built in 1927 as a
private club and the original
membership consisted of
prominent Rio Grande
Valley families with some
from as far away as San
Antonio.
After the crash of '29' the
doors were open to the

has been restored to its 'Hill' section on the North
former beauty and has a Shore of Port Isabel. In
rennovation the original
stucco remains on the
outside. Its spanish style
tower can be seen from the
highway which leads to
South Padre Island.
Above the inviting fire-
place in the lobby the
mammoth hotel crest, which
was carved especially for the
Yacht Club in Madrid, Spain,
hangs as a reminder of days
gone by. The restaurant and
lobby are decorated with
pictures of the past and
beautiful paintings of the
island. An interesting place
to see if you have never been
there...
The fruit is ripening in the
Valley with fruitstands all
along the way. These
delicious Texas grapefruit
and oranges are tree-ripened
and have the taste that only
a tree-ripened fruit has.
DICKEN'S EVENING
This month's Southern
Living has quite a write up
about Galveston's Historical
'Dicken's Evening on the
Strand'. This is a holiday
event presented by the
Galveston Historical Foun-
dation. 'Dicken's Evening on
the Strand' will be held
on Galveston's Strand 'The
Old Wall Street of the
Southwest' and its cross
streets between 20th and
25th (Bath) Streets. In the
50's, 60's, and 70's and on
through the turn of the
century...ninety-five per
cent of all the business in and
out of Texas to and from the
east flowed through The
Strand and Mechanic
Streets.
