INTERSTATE INLAND CANAL
Importance of Meeting at Lake Charles and Outline
of Work to Be Accomplished.
V TCh&t promises to be one of tbm larrest
of th sever&l waterways conventions that
.. hv been held in recent years. Is the ooe
called for Like Ch axles on next Tuesday
XCsy 22. Th&t enterprising city has been
Very sctire In cal-in public attention to
tbs occasion and plana have been made for
sv bis: fathering.
This will be the second general conven-
tion of the Interstate Inland Waterway
taasjue which was formed at the first meet-
Ins; held in Victoria Texas last Aurust.
The Lak Charles convention Is to perfect
Interstate organization end to advance the
project In every way
' Sine the Victoria meeting" the executive
committee baa devoted much time and la-
bor to Inform the people and set them in-
terested. That is a very Important step. It
Is necessary to have the publlo understand
what the treat possibilities of the coastal
canal are tn the way of commerce and de-
velopment. Thousands of communications
have been sent out on the subject. A spe-
cial map has been made up. showing the
proposed route of the canal through Louis-
ana and Texas from the Mississippi to the
Rio Grande. This map has been printed and
the project described in numerous paper
of the country. A systematic procedure 2as
been undertaken to collect statistics H show
freight tonnage available to can a naviga-
tion so that an approximate -rUmate ot
benefit and saving In rate can be made to
secure government indorsement and action.
Federal approprriions for waterways
Improvement ar dependent on facts and
figures to sbw that the benefits to be do-
rived are greater than the expenses of the
woiji. Several estimates have been ar---"welfred
to prove clearly that the inter-
coastal canal will save thousands of dol-
lars more Lmn the cost of the worie In dif-
ferent localities
The interstate inland waterway Is a bui-
t Bess proposition. It will provide practical
means for the most economical transporta-
tion. The cost of shipping Is one of the
very essential Items in commerce. A large
per cent of capital in business is taken up
la transportation so that it is strictly a
natter of dollars and cents when the low-
est cost of carriage can be obtained. Fur-
thermore the canal will open and render ac-
cessible for settlement millions of acres of
rich fertile lands like a railroad does when
ImUt into a new territory.
Indorsement of the project has been se-
cured from legislatures and various public
convention and from able and prominent
men of National reputation. It U becoming
talked of and advocated on every hand.
It is earnestly desired to complete a strong;
organization at the Lake Charles meeting.
Louisiana 1 very much interested. That
State will seed a large number of uelfgates.
Mr. C. S. E. Holland chairman of the ex-
ecutive committee has written hundreds of
personal letters to public men throughout
the country. The people should get to-
gether on this important proposition.
Every town and city affected by or look-
tag? to navigation should be represeuuri at
Lake Charles. Texas should by all means
very heartily join hands with Louisiana in
Starting a strong movement which will
sorely be productive of great assistance in
the progress of both States. If the inter-
eoastsl canal cause is properly attended to
end promoted in every practical manner.
Its completion can be secured without un-
necessary delay. The government has
more than once recognised and recommend-
ed this inland waterway and with liberal
substantial annual appropriations for such
improvement which are con.uently ex-
pee ted it will undoubtedly re.eive strong
support.
At Lake CT.ar.es further definite plans
will be made to advocate the project an J
engage public interest in the undertaking.
It Is very important to take part in making
the convention there an enthusiastic suc-
cessful event.

will be the greatest and most enthusiastic
convention that has ever peen held tn the
South before. Letters received by Mr. C- .
E. Holland chairman of the executive com-
mittee from the local committee of Lak
Charles state that the citv will be decorated
J In honor of the visitors. Special boat ex
cursions down tne oeautuui otKasieu river
will be given the visitors; drives mill be ar-
ranged over their beautiful shell road drive-
ways: magnificent banauets will be tendered;
pretty badges will be pinned upon the dele-
rates and a special train has been provided
to bring1 the Louisiana legislature to Lake
Charles. This train will also bring the gov-
ernor of Louisiana. Mr. Holland Is further
Informed that the Majestic hotel is receiving
telegrams from all parts of Texas and Lou-
isiana making reservation of rooms. This
hotel is a magnificent hotel having a larger
capacity than any other hotel between New
Orlea-ns La. and Los Angeles Cal. Mr.
Browder manager in former times of the
Menger hotel of Son Antonio is manager of
the Majestic hotel in Lake Charier and the
guests will be provided with the best hotel
accommodations that are obtainable any
where a
gamming up the whole matter. :t.e situa-
tion can not be beaten and proceedings
of the convention are emulated to bs of
tremendous advanxa- in promoting; this
great inland ""-- ray.
Not onl-a-lll Texas snd Louisiana be well
repre-Mited on this occasion with strong;
detritions but there will be special repre-
sentatives from different Mints of the
United State.
The Manufacturers Record and Chattanoo-
ga Tradesman the two leading manufactur-
ti.g papers of the South have published most
Mattering recommendations eg this great
waterway and they will De represented at
Lake Charles by special representatives.
The New Orleans Times-Democrat New
Orleans Picayune. New Orleans States New
Orleans Item Galveston News. Dallas News.
Houston Post" s?an Antonio Express Fort
"Worth Record. Houston Chronicle. San An-
tonio Light and Galveston Tribune will have
pciai representatives but the majority of
the papers named will also have staff men
and the editors themselves of some of the
papers will attend the convention.
The interest taken by tbese prominent
newspapers vf the Kouti. in this great pro-
)ct is in itself evidence of the Importance
of the undertaking.
There will probably be In attendance on
this convention eight or ten of our congresa-
mn pnd several United States senators.
The governor of Louisiana will also be In
attendance with his entire staff as well as
many of the prominent State officers of
Texas.
Oa Monday night at 830 at the Majestla
hotel. Lake Charles there will be a special
meeting of tbu executive committee of the
interstate Inland waterway in conjunction
with the local Lake Charles committee. A
this meeting a fuH program for the conven-
tion proeeed-r.es will be outlined that there
it ay be no delay In the matters of organi-
zation. If other cities will send delegations In pro-
portion to wnat Victoria mill send Laae
Charles will be crowded with visitors as
Victoria mill bead twenty delegates to attend
this convention. However the indications
now point to not less than 150 delegates from
the State of Texas. A letter received from
port Arthur states that they will hav
' thirty delegates and will require a special
car. Orarge has appointed a large delega-
tion and it is believed that Beaumont will
fail in line with a similar delegation. Cuero
pTt Lavaca Corpus Christ!. Goliad. Be-
ville Edna Wharton El Campo and this
enure section will be well represented.
A program of the proceedings can not
possibly be Issued at this time but suffice
It to say that some of the leading speakers
of the country will address the convention
n en who are posted on the importance of
Inland navigation and the delegate In at-
tendance will be the recipients of Informa-
tion on that occasion that-they do not now
dream of.
The railroeds throughout Texas and Louis-
iana have made a r.?e of one fare plus ZS
tents for the round trip for tnis convention.
Tickets will be on sale May J good to re-
turn on May l. This e-ceMingly low r"je
ought to enable all commamiiee in Texas
and Louisiana to have full representation at
the convention as It Is a much lower rate
than 1 now obtainable as a rule for con-
ventions This fact Indicates that the railroad-?'
are the friends of tne promote- of
the interstate waterway and are not fight-
ing the project as some people irjght imag-
ine. UJTO0W5 MAN LEAD.
Was Picked Up Hear Dallas in Uncon-
scious Condition.
DALLAS Texas. May IS. An unknown
white man. apparently about &i or tti years
old was brought to the city hall this after-
noon on one of the Inter-urban express cars
in an uTor.sclous condition. The mn was
rescued from the Trinity river near where
the tnterurban crosses the river. It is be-
lieved he fell from the trestle while cross ins;
the river.
He had evidently been tn the water for
some time when he was taken out by a man
who happened to be passing. When brought
to police headquarters he was in much pain.
Beeldes the large quantiy of water which
the man had swaUowe-d he was consider-
&Ay bruised about the right snoulder and
two or three ribs were broken.
The man was removed to the city hospital.
Prom appearances the man was a carpen-
ter or mechanic of some kind and a little
book found on his per won showed that he
had recently purchased some hard ware from
the Huey i Philip Hardware company. He
is of medium height and his face was cov-
ered with a stubby beard.
The injured man died a short time after
teing taken to the hospital. He did not re-
gain eon lousness. and nothing could bs
learned concerning his Identity or how he
was injured.
