of C. A. Morrta oa an indictment charging
forgery and attempt to pau a forged instru-
ment occupied the entire time In the Six-
tieth district court today and will not be
concluded until tomorrow. Morrli la a young

where h la family Is well known and promi-
nent. - Tha State's ' evidence sets forth that
during Jhe month' of Noverpber last Morris
wrote out a check on a typewriter" drawn

Igned Sam Park's name to It. The check
was made payable to E. B Morse and "E.
B. Muree" was Indorsed -on the back. Mr.
Park d?clared the chck a forgery.

cial Judge K. A. McDowell acting forjudge
Hightuwer who is ill. The defense made a
motion for a continuance which was over-
ruled and the case went to trial. The State
Introduced its testimony and late in the
afternoon rented. . Instantly. . the defendant
rested without Introducing testimony and
moved the court to charge the Jury per-
emptorily to acquit the defendant on the
ground the State's attorney had failed to
make a cum by falling to Introduce the
check In evidence. Court was adjourned
without pusxtng upon the lus and this
morning Judt McDowell overruled the mo-

time he was incapable of comprehending that

In Beaumont two hours before her father's

Willson Bought More Land.

BEAUMONT Texas April H. Another
small strip of land was today added to the
tract on the river front between Orleans
and Emmett streets which has been pur-
chased bf W. TV. Willson of Houston. Ef-
fort has also been made to buy port of the
O. W. O'Brien homestead adjoining on the
west but has not succeeded. Likewise the
lame parties tried to buy some of the A. 13.
Weaver homestead on the rear and across
Park street and have not yet succeeded the
Inquiries being met with the statement that
the land ia not for sale. Speculation has it
that the land Is either for a brewery or
the Frisco railroad.

BEAUMONT Texas April 17. -A suit was
filed by ths Southern Trading company of
Port Worth against the Southern Car and
Manufacturing Supply company charging
that defendant converted to lis own use an
engine valued at SHOO and an air compressor
valued at S12C0 belonging to the plaintiff
and located on Spindle Top. The plaintiff
seeks the return of the equipment or Judg-
ment for $a0 with interest St per cent
einoe the time of the alleged conversion
which wag about a year ago.

BEAUMONT Texas April 17. Two of the
largest freight cars ever seen In Beaumont
arrived last evening from Grand Rapids
Mich. being loaded with furniture for the
new Crosby house. The furniture was un-
loaded anil stored on the third floor of the
hotel building. The third and fotirth floors
of the bulldlnR are practically finished some
plumbing work being all that remains to be
don.
Manager Itageman stated last night that he
expected to be occupying the new building
by June 1.

PORT ARTHUR. Texas April 17.-Three
years ago ths Port Arthur Land company
began the construction of a canal beginning
at the mouth of Alligator baron where ths
Sabine branch of the Texas and New Orleans
railway crosses the bayou. This canal was
to extend along 'the Texas and New Or-
leans right of way to theJolf refinery the
soli excavated to form an. embankment to
keep ths salt water from covering the land
during storm tides. In this manner they
proposed to reclaim about TO.MO sores of
fine rice land. A dredge was built and the
machinery Installed by a New Orleans firm
at a cost of about $10009 but the tenacious
soli to be excavated proved too much for
the machinery and after many months' work
mostly repairs the -promoters became dls-
fusted and the project was abandoned.
Ince then ths dredge -and houseboat have
remained In the canal rotting and rusting.
Lately the owners havsKdeclded to movs the
dredge end houseboat Into Taylors bayou and
have advertised for bids for the work. They
must both be- moved across the track of the
Texas and New Orleans railway which Is
on a dump six or more feet above the prairie
level. What work Is Intended for the dredge
is not yet given out. j -
The council held a meeting last night to
rearrange committees and get the new mem-
bers placed. The police force was Increased
to two night officers end James Carlln was
Jiven the Job. Mr. Carlln has been on the
orce before and mads a most efficient of-
ficer. Alderman Rathrock presented his res-
ignation which will be acted on at the next
meeting and an election ordered to fill the
vacancy.
The steamer Masconomo arrived yesterday
at 2:90 p. m. from Galveston and at 4:30 p
m. was under the spout taking 120000 bushels
of wheat for Rotterdam. The business at
the docks Is heavy and men are in demand
at good wages.
Contractor Hook began yesterday the con-
struction of a nice residence on North Fifth
street for W. H. Schmyser. '

pageantry was replete with attractive scenes

John H. Kirkpatrlck was revealed to the
throng as the king after passing among them
unknown for some time. The king and queen
will be crowned Saturday night their coro-
nation being the culminating feature of the
carnival.
The crowds are enormous San Antonio
being the host to more visitors than she has

ORANGE Texas April 17. The city eoun-
ell or Orange met last night In adjourned reg-
ular session and appointed H. T. Fountain on
the night police force and Johq P. Swain as
city s avenger. Heretofore the city scaven-
ger bad paid to the city a license fee of
I11.M per month but last night It was de-
elded by the council to release him from the
payment of this fee in future tn return for
his keeping the streets and gutters In the
business district clean and free of paper and
trash. The bond of S. W. Levtngston ss city
treassrer was presented and approved the
sureties being C Miller J W. Ung F. H.
Farwbll and E. W. Brown. The council em-
powered the mayor to employ George B. Hol-
land as special attorney to represent the
city tn the ulta now pending on the enforce-
ment of the ordinance districting the saloons.
The marshal wss empowered to appoint addi-
tional police whenever he deemed it neces-
sary his appointments to be approved br the
mayor.

court this afternoon ths case of John
Thompson vs. the Orange Lumber Company
for damsges in the sum of 1784 was con-
cluded the Jury returning m verdict lt fa-
vor of ths plaintiff for the above amount.
The suit was baaed on a claim that plain-
tiff had a certain lot ot cypress timber In a
bayou on the Sabine river and. was pre-
vented by the defendant from re moving
same for several months .resulting in loss
of some of the timber and damage to the
plaintiff. The work of the county court is
practically ended and the Jury panel haa

Williams Bobbery Case Affirmed. '

AUSTIN Texas. April H.-The court of
criminal appeals today -affirmed the case of
D. Williams from Tarrant county. Williams
was convicted at Fort Worth and given a
16-year sentence on a charge of robbery. It
was charged that Williams had drugged and
then robbed T. M. Miles in a saloon at
Fort Worth. The court found an error in
the charge. ' - ... ."
County Clerk Fined.

county clerk of Johnson county was today
fined S and all costs by the court of crimi-
nal appeals for contempt. It appears Mr.
Bishop brought himself Into contempt by fil-
ing a statement ot facts in a case out ot
term ot court end. without authority of the
