If any one Is Houston Imagines that the public spirited cJtlsens srho take
hold of public enterprises of any kind do so for pleasure they are badly
mistaken. When men take up work of this kind they are entitled not only
to oourtsKrus treatment but to liberal support not only liberal support but
cheerful support.
Our annual No-Teu-Oh Carnival benefits Houston. It orimarily benefits
the retail merchant. The entire amount collected aad eapended on tlc Car-
nival would not pay the director a reasonable salary for the time they de
vote to the work. Their work costs you nothing. Is R expecting' . too muou
from you to meet them cheerfully with a liberal donation T Tbe Carnival must
be better every year and the men who are working for you gratis are net
supposed to beg for the money to carry out. the work. Meet tbe committee
when they call with the same liberality you would expect If you were do-
Ing the work.
e It Is not a donation. It Is a legitimate expense the same as clerk hire
fixtures er any expense necessary In order to enable you to do a prontable
business. The merchant who congratulates himself on giving only half they
ask Is sowing- ths seed that will result in the death of the Cmrntval. Don't
J be a leech. No elty can grow without a liberal progressive dtisensaip.

TO BE SELF-SUSTAINING
Idea that Public Will Be Asked
for Charity Hospital Dona-
tions a Misconception.
In th. Editor of The Post.
In aa editorial published In Sunday's
Post the proposed charity hospital was
placed tn a false and unjust position. In
that editorial the public was enjoined to
be prepared for frequent calls upon Its
generosity tn order to maintain the cur-
rent expenses of this charity hospital.
War. such s statement true or even probable-
true. I should at once return Mr.
Hermann hla note in which he offered
tSXM aad a block of around as his liberal
donation to this reuse snd cease all ef-
fort to further a scheme so unwise and
difficult.
We expect and assert thst we will sup-
port the charity hospital through Us pay
ward.. Such a plan Is both feasible and
Just to every condition already existing
or hoped to he created. And such s re-
suit can be' as safely predicted on the
plan proposed and the renditions existing
aa ean any practical Issue be predicted of
Its natural mum. We are not desiring
to rrVnl or hurt any eatabltshed Institu-
tion of Houston which Is becoming a city
Isrge enough to give fair end legitimate
support to all hospitals established and
niauagi d on efficient and honest Ifnee.
And. surely no private heepital would
be base enough to envy or attempt to
Injure the legitimate support of such s
air ease ry and worthy charity ss this.
We hope to erect the main wing of the
hospital ss plsnned by Mr. Psge and will
be able then to provide for IX patients
In time through endowments and with
the net proceeds of the Institution ws
sxpect So complete the structure and
build up In Houson a hospital as efficient
and complete In its work and equipment
as la tbe Charity hospital of New Orleans.
Fortunately the Indifference and petty
Selfishness met wtth In some Is amply
for by tne generous eninu
of others. Every tew days we are
iMd hv some substantial axorea-
on or interest in tnie wore.
