Max June and July went to lllfc 14 Uc
and 1118c respectively. In New Tork
Mar and July were .traded In at 1189c.
But at these figures many traders began
to feel a desire for a look at their money
and proceeded to reach out for profits.
The big bull leaders took everything- that
was offered still quotations sagged ap-
preciably and the advance toward 140
was checked. All of the early Improve-
ment was not lost however a good net
lain appearing at the close with May
quoted at 14c. June at 14 08c and July at
14.18c In New Orleans.
' Very little business was done In the
American spof markets Holders con-
con Unue stiff In their demands how-
ever and quotatlona were elevated an-
other fraction at several points middling;
closing at HV In Houston and lic In
New Orleans. Receipts are beginning; to
fall off while the export movement re-
mains in excess of what It was at this
time last year. Port stocks still show
considerable of a comparative deficit
with no likelihood of ever catching up.
The wire houses all report an enor-
mous amount of business done during the
past thirty days business which has. In
most Instances proved profitable to the
Southern speculators. Never before has
such heavy dealing tn chalk marks been
seen and never before has the non-professional
element taken down profits to'
such an extent as It has done of late.
Contrary to precedent reactions have
been welcomed as offering opportunities
for renewed buying instead of being
feared as pointers to disastrous breaks
and the greater their frequency the
greater have the succeeding advances
superinduced by their occurring been.
The fear has not entertained that values
would crumple. On the contrary It has
seen that they would enhance before
the public could get Its buying orders In
and get a slice of the good thing. In
other words the non-professionals have
been lending strength to Instead of de-
tracting frm the market inasmuch as It
has been Impossible to scare them into
Jumping over to the short side at any
stage of the game.
All the cotton markets will close to-
day and remain quiescent until Monday.

BROKERS' COMMENT.
J. X. Wisner & Co. The producers
have this year been enabled to reap the
benefit of hta-h prices which has here-
tofore been denied them and unless po-
litical troubles or some unforeseen ca-
lamity suddenly appears to cloud the
horlson with the usual amount of re-
action due from time to time there still
remains s probability of a further en-
hancement In prices. At the same time
wa muM remember that storms mme-
tlmea c me witnnut a moment's warning
and while sailing tn an open sea it is
always well to be prepared to furl sail
quickly.
Cargill A Richardson Estimates) for to-
morrow at Houston and New Orleans
were heavy but port receipts are grad-
ually diminishing and sentiment Is about
as bullish as It could be. Prominent New
Orleans bulls were reported as support-
ing the market at different times today
and while It appears rather unsettled
there is apparently nothing weak in the
situation and offerings do not go a beg-
ging. Further advances were scored m
the American "pot msrkeia and sales
Aggregate liberal proportions.
H. & B. Beer. New Orleans. Notwith-
standing early Liverpool advices were dis-
appointing ojf market opened 7 to 9
higher on near months and 2 to 3 on late.
Subsequently profit taking occasioned de-
cline 4 points but the general circulation
of bullish telegrams througnout the in-
terior claimm? that March and May in
New Tork would sell over 14c today and
the later improvement tn Liverpool oc-
casioned an advance of 17 at 21 from the
bottom.
Values ruled steady thereafter until
near the close when a steady stream of
veiling superinduced a slight loss making
the net gain 14 to 17 point on the day.
The movement continued free; still It
Is confidently believed that a marked de-
crease in receipt will materialise after
the nolldaya.
li wi- rumored that press cables re-
ceived from London today say that Rus-
sia has acceded to all of Japan's demands.
This had a favorable Influence on values.
There was considerable realising over
the holidays yet the market continued
to .absorb all offerings readily and show
an upward tendency. The local spot mar-
ket was steady at an advance of V.
with sales of 6700. Sentiment Is very op-
timistic and predictions of much higher
E rices being realized are freely circu-
tted. This has certainly been a banner
season for the South and the high prices
received for cotton have added materially
to the prosperity of the country.
BRADSTREET'S REPORT.
Activity in Holiday Goods and
Quiet Wholesade Trade.
(Associated Press Report.)
New York. December 24. Bradstreet's
tomorrow will say:
Activity In holiday trade with sales
equal to or in excess of last year at most
markets quiet In wholesale lines as usual
at this period with fair re-orders from
jobbers and exceptlonslly strong and ac-
tive markets for speculative staples no-
tably cotton wheat coffee and provis-
ions. Other points brought out srs the
sustained better feeling In Iron and steel
and exceptional eaae in money at a time
when disbursement preparations might
be expected to lead to high rates. High
prices for raw textiles ara a drawback
with which the cotton manufacturing
trade is particularly struggling. Hides
tea and wool are strongen In tone. In in-
dustrial lines features are ending of the
Colorado coal strikes snd gradual down-
ward readjustment of wages In coal coke
and iron and steel to meet changed con-
ditions of supply and demand. The year
Is however closing tn many tines with
a rather more cheerful tone than seemed
possible some time ago.
Cotton mills are not well supplied with
A CHRISTMAS
SCATTERED STRENGTH
IN STOCK MARKET.
Movement Extended to Stocks
that Have Been Quiet for
" Many Weeks.
(Associated Frees Report.)
New York. December 34. Today's stork
market showed strength scattered all
through It but the room traders who had
the market all to themselves accepted
this as s part of the Christmas celebra-
tion almost as much ss the strains of
the brass band that enlivened the pro-
ceedings on the floor of tha stock ex-
change during the last hour of the ses-
sion. Of the stocks which moved notably one
or two were In the list of usually prom-
inent stocks. In many cases the gains
noted were In stocks that hsd not moved
for weeks. Just why It should conduce
to the gaiety kt the holiday celebration
to awaken tnyse sleeping securities from
a long quietand rush them up several
points at a time must be left to the in-
scrutable minds of stock brokers on a
trolic. Here and there the disposition to
take profits on the rise seemed to be irre-
pressible. But this was frowned upon
as throwing a dampening spirit upon the
occasion.
The lingering effect of the increase an-
nounced yesterday In the Lake Shore divi-
dend was manifest In movements of a
handful of high grade stocks some In the
railroad and some tn the Industrial list.
Rumors of possible dividend Increases ac-
companied some of these advancea and
with othera there went suggestions of a
coming distribution of surplus known to
oe In the treasuries of the companies.
There waa obviously a speculative con-
test in General Electric and Westinghousa
Electric the price of the latter being
bid up acros the former thus making
good predictions current for some time
past but relapsing again to the low
parity. In some of the more obscure
stocks It wss evident that the current
disfavor of selling movements was taken

EFFECT OF EASTERN CRISIS
CAUSED AN UPWARD
TENDENCY IN GRAIN.
Possibility of War Caused Stimu-
lus to Buy la Shorts All
Grains Higher.
(Associated Press Report.)
Chicago December 14. The crisis In the
Far East was the almost exclusive fac-
tor In rraln markets today. May wheat
closed hlcher May corn up and
oats 4 higher with provisions shads to
74 hlcher.
It was a broad market In wheat and
prices ruled firm. Shorts were stimu-
lated Into buyliuj by ths possibility that
war might be dee la red between Russia
and Japan before traders resumed busi-
ness on Mdnday. Outside reports wets
also strong. The bull operator was a
moderate buyer openly and the demand
from this source helped to creite In-
creased strength. Opening pries were
steady owing to the firmness In foreign
markets and to the small local receipts.
May started a shade lower to 4 higher
at 8344 to 834- With light offerings
prices advanced rapidly and May soon
sold at 844 an advance of 1 cent over the
opening figure. With good profits In
view pit traders turned active sellers
snd the market declined. No great weak-
ness was manifested however and a firm
feeling prevailed at the close with May
al 83H. Minneapolis Duluth snd Chicago
reported receipts ol 687 cars against 419
lust week.
bhorts In com were anxious to cover
both because of the strength In wheat
snd the fear of tossiole developments In
the Russo-Japanese situation over the
Christmas holidays Buying was on a
liberal scale and offerings were rather
llfht following some selling by commis-
sion houses. Weather was unfavoiablo
lur the movement but predictions were
for clear and colder wea'.her. A feature
In the trading was moderate buying by
the same interest that Is. long wheat.
Closing prices were strong. After open-
mir ( to 14 nlgher at 44H to 44t4j444
May sold between 4444Vj and 44V. clos-
ing at 44V944H. Receipts 21 cars four
of contract.
With other markets strong oats ad-
vanced In sympathy with free profit tak-
ing. A firm tone prevailed at the close.
