Should the Boys Work
To the Editor of The Post.
At what age should a boy go to work?
This question can only be answerd after
a careful Inquiry Into the financial con-
dition of the family of which he Is A
member taken together with the number
which constitute the family.
There are many parents who think ot
nothing but the almighty dollar and
with this Idea In view they train their
children up to look forward to the time
when they can go to work ar.l earn
money. The result Is that the merchants
ot Houston are being dallv accosted to
give employment to the children ot par-
ents whose personal appearance and dress
would Indicate that their financial con-
dition la above the average and. hence
that there is no necessity for their chil-
dren to become bread-winners before they
reach the age of maturity.
These money-loving parenta are look-
ing for work for their undeveloped un-
educated and Ignorant children of IS and
14 years of age. I would like to get them
all In a row point my finger at them
and say "For shame Send your children
to school give them an education give
them practical knowledge which will
enable them In after life to resist tempta-
tion and to earn a livelihood."
Pitiable Is the condition of' a child
whose father Is not able to support him
or her but more pitiable Indeed Is ths
condition of that child whose father
earns sufficient to take care of his chil-
dren and yet forces them out Into this
cruel world of competition and knavery
In order that they may add to his al-
ready sufficient Income. The pillory
should be the award of such fathers.
There are many such fathers In Houston
and when at the close of their earthly
existence they look back over their
ninny acta of commission and omission
this set of theirs In turning their chil-
dren out Into the world will be the one
which will cause them most sorrow and
regret. J. J. Paatoiia.

"IN OLD KENTUCKY."
After a decade of remarkable financial
prosperity the ever-popular olue-arasa
melodran-a. "In Old Kentucky" still re-
main a potent attraction with play-goers
from Maine to California and from the
great lakes to the Gulf of Mexico f rob-
ably no American play of modern times
appeals aa strongly to the masses as does
this idyllic romance of the South with Its
characteristic types of Southern life Its
scenes on ths race track. Its grotesque
pickaninnies and Its manifold other fea-
tures. The singing and dancing little
darkles come In for no small share of ap-
plause and their portion of the entertain-
ment la one of the delightful episodes of
tbe play. There are some thirty of these
ragged pickaninnies some of whom com-
pose the Wangdoodle Brass Band others
sing dance shoot craps and amuse them-
selves la various ways. Their native un-
affected sase and apparent enjoyment of
all they do render this a -remarkable stags
picture. The lovers of good wholesome
stage entertainment find "In Old Ken-
tucky" a veritable mine of good things
lbs eleventh tour of the drama Is marked
by an entirely new and expensive scenlo
equipment throughout and by the best
company that ever appeared In the play.
It will be given at the Sweeney Coombs
opera bouse today matinee and night.
