Ouffay Petroleum oompany sod had a
conference with. Superintendent Fisher.
Ths men. seemed unwilling to so hack to
work at th standard wages If soma of
their number war to be left without em-
ployment and on th ether hand they
were unwilling to accept the compromise
proposition and all return Ja work at 12. Is
per day. Superintendent Fisher then to'd
the Batsoa and Spindle Top men that
they might all return to work at th old
standard of wages it being tacitly un-
derstood at th same time that the flnf-
fey oompany would gradually doss down
the smaller producing wells and gr 1-
ually reduce the working fores In the fm

This proposlttoir-coverid -snbstsnttelly

dltfereoce sad agreement of maw to re-
turn to work was deferred pending a con-
ference between the oil men as to Insist-
enceijpon recognition of their union. Mr.
risher gave the ell men distinctly to un-
derstand that while the Ouffey company
would concede the standard wage for
such number of men employed by them
they could not afford to deal through the
union but would deal directly with the
men. The oil men then asked for fur-
ther time In which to consult with
their companions and this bring tha sit-
uation up to this afternoon.
It I stated that there Is now a division
of sentiment among the ell field men
some favoring a prompt acceptance of
the Ouffey company's proposition and a
return to work while other are sdvlslnjr
that the recognition ot the union be In-
sisted upon.
Although ths formal agreement had not
been made at the hour or this writing tha
chances are that the oil field men will
accept the proffered terms and return to
work both at Spindle Top and Batson to-
morrow morning.
MR MARKHAMTS STATEMENT.
Mr. C H. Marknass general manager
of the 3. M. Ouffay Petroleum oompany
tonight gave out the following statement
of Us company position anenb the
strike:
For some months past we have been
operating wells at Spinal Tap Saratoga
aad Katson which hav not yielded suf-
ficient on to pay for the east of produc-
tion based on rates of wages established
during boom days when conditions of em-
Sloyment and cost of living were very
liferent from what they are today. By
making the proposed reduction of De-
cember 1 we had hoped to be able to
continue operating all of out wella. thus
retaining all of our employee. . Our men
have declined to recognise these condi-
tions and have refused to work at the
new scale of wages. We would hav had
no difficulty In securing sufficient men to
onerate the nronertv at the nmm seal.
but they would have had to be brought
nere irons otner sections or tne country
and aa in conditions prevailing In some of
the fields this would have meant strife
and probably injury to tnnooeat parties
we have decided to restore the old scale
of wasrea. and will erotset ourselves from
loss by discontinuing the operation of non-
paying weus aa soon as tots can conve-
niently ba done. : The question resolves
itself Into a etmnte business nroDOsttion.
It Is very much to the credit of our
employes that no violence destruction of
firoperty or material Interference with
he rights otutie company has so far re-
sulted from the controversy. .
forembnVj OTIPIBD. -The
following telegram show that em-
ployes in all the field can return to work
tomorrow at the standard wages. This
offer Is the ultimatum of the Ouffey com-
pany which refused to deal with th
union directly and If the oil men Insist
upon recognition of their union the Guffey
company will employ other men.
