JAPANESE MINISTER
REV. Y. SASAKURA LABORS
AMONG COUNTRYMEN.
Will Leave the Webster Colony
to Return to Studies at Union
Theological Seminary.
Rev. T. Saaakura. a student of Usten
Theological seminary of Richmond Va.
has been laboring among his native peo-
ple of the Japanese colony at Webster
during the past summer his work be-
ins under the direction of the home mis-
sion committee of Brasos presbytery. In
a few days he will leave fvr Richmond
to return to hla studies la the Virginia
seminary.
Mr. Suaakura arrived at Webster lo
Mtiy. Immediately after the close of ths
st-ml nary year. Since then he hss or-
ganised English classes for the study of
the language and the Bible these classes
meeting for work every day and night.
His labors therefore have been of great
value to th educational Is te rests ol the
Japanese cotosy. giving them an oppor-
tunity of acquiring proper tnatructtou In
the languuge of tne country besides In-
stilling in the minds of the people the
moral and religious prlnclplea of the na-
tion. Kvery Sunday he has conducted re-
ligious services- fur the people of the com-
munity. The people have responded to
these efforts on the part of the Preaby-
tertuu churrh In this district to provide
them with gospel privileges and every
service has been attended by earnest and
attentive Japanese colonists. Since the
services began one of the native Jape re-
ceived bapttitm at the hands of Rev. J. A.
Hall of the Alvln Presbyterian church
and was received Into the communion. Hu
Is of the first spiritual fruit of the labors
of Mr. Saaakura though many others of
the colony are greatly interested In Chris-
tianity. It Is .Interesting to note thla work
among the Japanese for It was sought by
the neoDle themselves and not thrust
I upon them by any ecclesiastical body.
Iait sSeptemoer the preanytery or uraaos
met in the Second Presbyterian church of
thia city. At that meeting the committee
on home missions rvprted the receipt of
a communication from the lender or the
Webster colony of Japanese. The com-
munication referred to the matter of re-
ligious privileges for the Japanese com-
munity and requested that the pres-
bytery nr range some means of affording
the people of the colony religious Instruc-
tion. The proposition came to the Pres-
byterian church because Hon. S. Soibcira
leader of the colony was mora familiar
with the missionaries and the work of
that church In his native land than of
nny other. To thla appeal the presbytery
renpnuded by sending the young Japanese
divinity atudent from Union seminary
and the record of his work shows that he
is well fitted for thla field. Now that ha
Is compelled to return to Richmond tha
presbytery will have to look else w hers
for a man to serve the field. It la ad-
mitted that the work la an important one.
quite km Important aa the sending of mis-
sionaries to the foreign field. And the
presbytery la determined to make every
provision for church privileges when
they are appreciated as they are In this
case.
