weeks the officials of the negro social
settlement hay. announced that they
have lowered the cost of a wholesome
meal for atx persons to 41 cents or 7
cents a person. The reduction Is achieved
largely through an advanced knowledge
of cooking by which cheap meats are
made as toothsome and appetising as ths
more expensive. Her. is one division of
the cost:
One and one-half pounds of flank beef
at U cents a pound; spinach t cents;
potatoes fi cants: naraUv i
onions 1 cent. The remainder of cost
or It cents provides for beaten biscuits
and baked apples.
' The settlement Insisted that the 7 -cent
meal la not theoretical and that such
