THE SILENT
ill Again Start Grand
Great String
When the grand circuit cavalcade
starts Its campaign this year one of the
most noted drivers that will be Included
In It will be Edward F. Gears the "Silent
Man from Tennessee." Ever since 1877
Geers has Journeyed North from the
Southland with a stable of harness
horses that have earned more than their
share of the rich purses they competed
for and garnered an Imposing array of
world's records. He early assumed a
prominent position among relnsmen and
m tbe days when the stars of Budd Doble
Orrln Hlckok the Goldsmith brothers
John B. Turner John Splan and many
others were blazing the brightest. It waa
quite generally conceded that not one of
that brilliant aggregation of turf generals
could train or drive a horse better than
the rising young Southern horseman.
Hlckok the Goldsmith brothers and
"General" Turner have departed this life
while Doble and Splan have practically
retired from driving but today "Marse
Ed" retains his proud position at the
head of the list of present day drivers
just as he ranked with the best In the
late '79s.
To attempt even a brief enumeration
of all the kings and queens of the turf
that have been reared by Geers would
consume 'far more space than Is at dis-
posal but a few of his best ones may be
mentioned. The first horse that he had
to gain National promlnenoe was the
Tennesse bred pacer Mattle Hunter
2:13 2-4. whose duels with the (Teat pac-
ing quartette of 1879 Blind Tom Lucy.
Rowdy Boy and Sleepy George created
the greatest Interest In the pacer
known to that date. Hla next record-
breaker was Little Brown Jug 2:12 1-4
with which he secured the world's pacing
record. With Brown Hal 2:12 1-2 an
own brother of the Jus; he won the
world's record for pacing stallions. After
Brown Hal came another Hal pacer that
many horsemen stUl Consider to have
been the equal of any slde-wheeler yet
shown as a campaigner. This was none
other than the noted Hal Pointer 2:04 1-2
with which Geers again lowered the
world's raolng record. It waa while drlv-
lng Hat Pointer that Geers was engaged
to train and drive the Village r'rm
bones. Village Farm the property of
C. J. and Harry Hamlin East Aurora
N. Y. waa then rapidly advancing to a
prominent position as a home of the
trotter and with Geers as a driver It waa
soon placed far In tha lead of all trotting
nurseries of Its da.
While In the employ of Village Farm
Geers raced such horses as Nightingale
2:05; Robert J 2:01 1-2; Fantasy 2:06;
Blight Regent 2:01 1-4; The Monk
2:02 (-4; Helrat-Law 2:05 1-4; Lady of
the Manor 2:04 1-4; Lord Derby 2:05 3-4;
The Abbot. 2:02 1-4; Dare Devil 2:09
and Direct Hal 1:04 1-4.
Since about 190 Geers has trained a
public stable and his horses bave been

Geers has named all his stars for the
meeting at Pittsburg. His laat appear-
ance at Pittsburg was In 1892 when the
last big meeting was held at Homewood
Park. At that meeting Fantasy made
her first bow to tha publlo In the opening
even ot tne wees. 'inis niiy mat was
destined that year to shatter all records
for 8-year-olds by trotting In 2:08V.. a
record that was not beaten Until fourteen
years later when Oeneral Watts trotted
In 2:06. lost the first two heats of her
maiden effort to FJlfgrida In 2:18 2:18
and then won in 2.184 2:19 2:18y time
that will be beaten by from 2 to 10 sec-
onds In the S-year-ola Matron stake at
the coming meeting.
Fantasy was Geers' only winner of the
week. Hal Pointer succumbed to Mascot
2:04. Major Wonder and Johnston In the
free-for-all pace and many predicted that
the veteran had seen his best days a
charge that waa refuted later In the year
by lowering the color of all the best
pacers In training. Nightingale; 2:08 was
sIho In noor form and finished absolutely
last In the free-for-all trot to Martha
Wilkes 2:08. and other. Later In the
year the chestnut daughter of Mambrlno
King won several scorching contests from
the best trotters In training at that time.
The other starters from the stable that
week failed to win a victory for Gears but
the majority captured a portion of tbe
money.
This year when the "Grand Old Man of
th Turf starts hi . campaign he will
have on of th strongest stable that he
has ever marshaled and he la certain to
account for hi (hare of tbe purse. At
th head of his string I th little black
mare. Dudi Archdale :06U. that I
about as good a trotter as there 1 In
sight for the fast classes. On ber racing
record Dudle lav over all th othsr fast
trotters In training for she ha won
more race been a faster mller In a race
and won more money than any one of
the others. She ha never been unplaced
4n a single heat In her nfe and ha never
been worse than third In tbe summary
of a race. She la not a hsndsoms mare
but is one that never make a break and
can be pieced anywhere la a field of
horses. -
Second to her among th trotter la
Anvil. 2:08 1-4 ilk Dudle th property of
Frank Jones of Memphis. Anvil Is a
real rack track product for ha was foaled
at the Memphis track. He won the $10000
M. and M. last year and had be not been
taken lam shortly after would prob-
ably have been the largest money win-
ning trotter of the year. -For Mr. Johea

trial 2:01V.; Funny Crank and
Loopwood. Funny Crank Is the property
of Geers and on the showing he made
In the far Southwest last season Geers
expects him to prove another Billy Buch
a horse with which he won more money
In one season than any trotter has ever
done before or since.
Among the pacers Akar Is generally re-
garded as the best the veteran will rice.
This horse which Is one of the hand-
somest stallions that ever graced the turf
suffered from a quarter crack the early
part of last season but he rounded to
later on and showed close to 2:06. Idol
Chimes 2:12 1-4 about the last of the
Chimes family that will appear on the
Grand Circuit has been a sensational
pacer over the) Wisconsin half-mile
tracks and as Geers has had much suc-
cess with tills family It may be that he
will prove a bard nut to crack. Online
Patch. 2:23 1-4 Is a son of the world's
champion pacer Dan Patch 1:66 1-4 out
of a mare by Online 2:04 the world's
champion 4-year-old pacer and la highly
regarded. Early Thacker. 2:09 1-4 the
only faKt record pacer In the stable waa
raced last year on tho Great Western
Circuit and was a good second to Don
Densmore 2:03 1-4. around 2:06.
With these phenomenal prospects to
draw from as well as a host of others
of only slightly less demonstrated speed
It Is certain that Tommy Murphy Waltor
Cox W. L. Shaw Havi James and the
other younger drivers thst ' have large
stables of first-class horses to provide
suitable contestants from must look to
their laurels If they do not want to play
second fltliile to Ed Geers a man without
a superior as a trainer or race driver
and ono whose fame has never been tsr-
nlnhed by even thn slightest suggestion
of fraud or dishonesty In all the year
he has adorned the turf.

has expressed his view on tha report

Flynn how to box. Ha says Flynn is too
old In the boxing game to try and ohang

a safe course to try and change the style

such a long time. Ryan says howevsr
that he will be able to show Flynn many
tricks worth while to him when he feces
