HOUSTON DIVIDENDS
PROVE ITS PROSPERITY
Panic in Other Portions of the Country Have
but Slight Effect in This Particular Section.
The assertion that Houston and this
particular section of the country did not
suffer as acutely as did most other places
flam the eKcts of the recent financial
panic that caused the. collapse of sub-
stantlul business enterprises in the Bast is
sustained by the record of dividend dis-
bursements for the first half of the pres-
ent year. That perlinl was supposed to
be the critical stage everywhere but there
was no appreciable dlrnunltloo of pros-
perity among- the more substantial enter-
prises of Houston and Harris county
which Is assurance sufficient that whlls
this section may not be Immune from
monetary and commerclaJ disorders that
affect other sections of the United States
the force with wgtlch they strike here Is
o greatly reduced because of the fa-
terlal advantages enjoyed that their harm-
ful Influence la reduced to a minimum.
It Is granted that the growth of this
section mav have been immeasurably re-
tarded during the period mentioned for
no man can tell whai may have been In
sic-e had the great prosperity continued
throughout the country but the tact re-
mains that while industries and enter-
prises In other parts of the country were
jailing by the score those In this vicinity
continued the even tenor of their way
and not only continued to do business but
entiled their usual dividends.
It Is not possible to give a complete list
of the dividends earned and declared for
the first half of the year for the reason
that many of the best money making con-
cerns of the vicinity are what are consid-
ered close corporations and ptibllc an-
nouncements of dividends are not made.

ALLY FOR THE AUDITORIUM
United Commercial Travelers Go On Record as
a Body Favoring ItsCdnstruction.
At the meeting of the United Commer-
cial Travelers' Association held In the
lodge rooms In the Braaos hotel annex
last night the auditorium proposition
which has been so vigorously advocated
by The Post and Houston's most promi-
nent rltlsens and taxpayers was discuss-
ed thoroughly and the association de-
cided to extend every possible assistance
to The Post and the cltlsens of Honston
In the effort to land this big proposition.
It was suggested that there Is no Im-
provement of which the city stands more
In need thsn a structure of this kind
owing to the Inadequate facilities for
handling big gatherings of all kinds. It
was pointed out that Houston might ee-
Qure many conventions and entertain-
ments which she would never be able to
get under the present conditions In force
here and that It was her duty to herself
as a big. enterprising city and the me-
tropolis of Texas to exert every Influ-
ence to secure such a building within a
reasonable length of time.
