SURPLUS OF CARS
REPORT SHOWS A RAPID DE-
CREASE nr NUMBERS.
May Be Shortage When Railroads
Have to Supply Demand for Cane
and Bice Shippers.
Bulletin No. J7-A. Just V sued by the
committee on C4r efficiency of the Amer-
ican Railway association contains some
interesting figures regarding the surplus
of empty cars for the route composed of
the States of Louisiana Texas and New
Mexico. '
The report shows that on the 27th of
last May there were 7640 empty cars on
the lines of the vrlous railroads In the
States mentioned) above. On July this
number had been reduced to lz0 and on
July 22 to SMS.
The surplus of empty cars la being re-
duced rapidly according to the above fig-
ures which would indicate that unless
the roads secure a large number of cars
within the next sixty days that there will
be a ehortafe of cars for the moving of
the Texas and Louisiana rice cropa.
According to the estimates of the rice
men that crop will soon begin to move
with startling raiildlt'. and the demand
lor "emiitlea" will be heavy for a consid-
erable period. The cane crop will also be-
gin to move soon and will be unusually
large. It is not known whether the rail-
roads have taken steps to insure the shlp-
lrs enough cars .so handle their croi'S
but there seems a be an opinion that
the need of extra'oars wUl be Imperative
within a very short time.
